says who? If there is a market for it they will make them. And it sounds like there is big enough demand. The manufacturers would not offer the XP downgrade option without supporting it with drivers. That would be silly.
I work in the industry and lots of manufacturers have stopped making xp drivers for laptops.

Then I guess that this article does not apply to those manufacturers. On the other hand... those manufacturers who DO offer XP as a downgrade option, and who DO offer XP drivers for those systems are probably glad. And obviously there are enough of them to make a difference to Microsoft.
I agree with you I would downgrade any client's computer to XP if I could. I just mentioned the fact that a lot of hardware these days are being designed for Vista so the faster everybody migrates the faster we can have a stable Vista.

remember that even if hardware is designed to work with vista doesn't exclude the hardware working with xp. and i would say the fact that MS has decided to extend the availability of XP means there are many major vendors who want xp. which means the drivers will be made.
Yeah but it's like everybody is trying to avoiding the inevitable.

I wouldn't exactly say that it is given XP won't last till Win7 is released. As a matter of interest, when did MS stop producing Win95 ahead of XP (remembering ME would have also been in release).
How do you think Win 7 is going to perform in the first year or so?

I would hope better than Vista. If Microsoft rush Win 7 to the market they are fools. That was their mistake with Vista. It just was not ready. Heck, it is even barely ready with SP1. This Win 7 thing better be very well polished! And it better offer a ton of new features... other wise why bother?
Vista did not offer enough of an incentive to upgrade from XP and the overhead was just too high.
MS would have made more money offering two new versions of XP...
1) a Stripped down version.. a la "Tiny XP" for the sub notebook market.... and
2) a Souped up version of XP (Vista) called XP Ultimate for $100 upgrade.
They would have made millions more than they have with Vista.
I don't know.
And thankfully I am no longer a Windows user so I don't care. But it can be said for the sake of MSes credibility, Win7 can't afford to be a damp squib.
True but as a Network Administrator you're stuck with half the computers on Xp and the other half with Vista which creates twice as much work.
I think Microsoft can afford quite a few squibs still. I don't see any other OS to even come close to rivaling Windows.
Maybe Shuttleworth should have used his money to write a paid for OS from scratch that can compete with windows and also support windows software.
