Microsoft issues giant patch

One of the critical issues is a known issue in the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access which allows an attacker to execute code on the affected machine.

A second critical issue is a fix for a problem in Microsoft Word that allows an attacker to take control of a system if a user opens a specific Microsoft Word document.

Another critical vulnerability in the Microsoft Image Color Management system is fixed by the patches released this week.

Yeah.. I would could that...critical...

sob, There goes my cap again. All these updates are killing me. Between anti-virus, firewall, applications, windows and game updates i lose about 500MB a month or so. its a joke i tell you. had to do a 1.3GB update on neverwinter nights 1 on friday just to carry on playing on my server.

Just imagine if i was on dial up, I would still be waiting.

Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

Hee hee.... I told ya'll Windows had major security issues. Strange actually, that so many people trust Micro$oft to protect you and your data.
But at least M$ is trying to clean all this up.

My Vista system only asked to update 32mb worth of updates.

I had a thread a few months ago, where I had to install about 80-90mb in one go, so I think the article could be wrong. Not the biggest update I've seen in two years and it can't be, because Service Pack 1 was huge.

The thing about SP1... it's all the previous Vista patches and updates in one, so it can't really count.

I can understand that much. Just saying that I've had larger updates than this before ;)

You might have had to download updates that were released earlier ... I think the "biggest" statement refers more to the amount of patches released on a single day, rather than the size of the downloads

How often does (k)Ubuntu, for example, need to be updated?

It depends on what software you have, when updates for specific programs are released and so on. Usually, it's around every 4 weeks. It is sometimes more often than M$ updates, but the thing is that M$ updates are only for Windows itself. There are barely any "[K]Ubuntu" updates, maybe once every two months.

Well, at the end of the day trusting the OS to keep your data safe is kind of like being careless. All OS'es have some or the other security flaw. Some are just better at keeping out the nasties than others. Windows falls off the bus quite a bit here but that does NOT mean it's not a viable OS for various applications.

Firewalling your PC and not downoading **** from dodgy places also helps a lot you know

MS updates only come once per month. Its just something you have to do.

People always complain about MS software being full of holes, but yet when they release patches to fix the problems people still complain about now having to patch.

For the meantime until something better comes along patches are like AV updates - you just have to do them. All software has holes in it - at least the vulnerabilities are being addresses.

If you don't want to patch get a PS2 :D

Really? What happens if you don't?

Ho wait, Nothing! I have never updated, and have never had a problem. (touch wood).

People who need these security patches are people who are careless with their PCs.

Anyways...

Patches

I downloaded latest patch however now I had to revert back to IE 6 since it could not work on IE7 life is never:confused:

Reset your IE 7 to default settings. Stop being a lazy guy and type your posts coherently, life is never

Not really - ever heard of worms. Picture the following. A user has a laptop which he takes home and connects to smutty site x. In doing do he's machine is infected with a worm which makes use of vulnerability y.

Now he brings his machine to the office where all the other unpatched machines get infected.

If you just have your home machine to worry about and your careful where u go and have a firewall etc etc etc then fine, but for the other 90% machines out there - they need to be patched.
