Microsoft MVP's don't know everything and are not always right.

Moron told me the book I was studying from was mainly for hobbyist programmers.

I dug a little deeper. Turns out that same book forms one of Microsoft's Official MCSD courses.

They are specialists in tinkering around with the latest tech and ideas in a sandbox environment, great at talking about it and spreading awareness.

Ask them to come and implement this new awesomsauce in an existing code base with a few years' worth of fluff and...Nothing. Hopeless.

In fact, we had one of them showcase how fantastic the latest (at the time) Visual Studio Ultimate was, showed us all the features and how you can manage the source code's flow and dependencies all from the IDE. The problem? The actual developers are only given Visual Studio Professional.

So basically what the bright spark showed us over the course of the hour was everything we can't have.

Another one came and "consulted" new ideas of how our communication with a message broker should work. Wasn't prepared and tried to wing it. Came across this foreign thing called an XSD and asked us if we knew what it was.

....but boy are they experts in WCF and what not! Go Silverlight, the future!!!

You would think they would have at least come across it with all their love for all things WCF I mean really. I think I have come to appreciate that, even in a place like Silicon Valley, they have a whole bunch of guys who specialize in 1 particular field, all working on something like Microsoft Office. One team works on developing the Calendar in Outlook, another team works on Contacts list Dev, another whole team works on the .NET Interop and even then with .NET it can break down into many other teams.

But my god, at least they could use google like I did for even half a minute, before opening their mouths it's not that hard.

I'm not raging or even upset at all. Just musing over all this :crylaugh:

From what I've seen in SA most of these guys who do the presentations get told a few days ahead of time oh by the way you have this big presentation in a few days and you need to look like an expert.
They are usually also newly certified and don't have years of solid experience. The guys with the solid experience are neck deep in a project of some sort.

Showing off enterprise features is very common and quite annoying. Oh, that'll work well for us, Sorry Enterprise only. Like most SME's can afford those license costs.

Microsoft's head offices are in Redmond WA, near Seattle (I've been to their offices). They have at least one local office in SV, that I used to drive past.

AFAIK, MVPs aren't even MS employees, so unless I'm really off the mark(???), you are mistaken in thinking that they are even employees at all.

They're not. BBD at one stage had three or four employees that qualified as MVPs and if I'm not mistaken it's a voting system so it's more a case of popularity (tech talks etc) than skill that gets you the title.

Personally I always laugh at people who think they can click their way out of a production problem. Linux is for the big boys who want to push 10000 tps on a 2 core server after cracking open the kernel.

I used to be ignorant like you in my youth. They have changed leaps and bounds over the years, opening tons of their technology, giving away licenses. Perhaps show a bit of respect to the company that gives you your salary at the end of the month, and by them I mean giving you the opportunity to use their tools to make a living, just in case you want to argue semantics.
