Microsoft .NET goes open source, cross-platform

Lol. The only reason I have Windows on my Mac through Paralles is so that I can use Visual Studio on Mac. Now I won't need Windows. On my Mac that is :)

This probably means Silverlight will also become Linux compatible at some point in the future. Good news for those who currently have to implement workarounds to watch Netflix on a Linux box.

You don't need workarounds on Linux to watch Netflix, all you need is Chrome v37+ browser.

It's the server side framework at this stage, and a close partnership with Xamarin. Certainly more to come.

I watched TWiT's Windows Weekly last night. Both WinFans and Open Source people are gobsmacked - Microsoft giving away some of the crown jewels is Big News. Thurrott says it should have happened years ago.

Though Nadella got to announce it, the plan actually started under steveb and got the nod from him.

It's a new Microsoft.

As someone said, the new Microsoft doesn't really want to own the boats and ships (devices); they aim to be the ocean in which everything floats.

People still watching Netflix. Ever heard of bittorrent?

Of all the things to comment about this situation, you chose to comment about that?

This shift is a big thing, and it will be a game changer for a large number of devs..

My info is outdated then, last I heard you needed Pipelight to get it working.

That was the case sometime back. These days all you need is Chrome v37+ & NSS v3.16.2+ to be installed and you are good to go ;)

BitTorrent is old tech.

Netflix is new.

Sure, BT will still be around for a long while, but Netflix will take over wrt video streaming and video on demand.

Will Take over?

Has been the leader for quite some time on a purely bandwidth usage perspective.

Vs has been the de facto standard for every sort of programming, even console gaming, since nt. either ms is throwing clueless macolytes a lifesaver or its getting soft about expanding market share

I think it's about not losing devs to non-MS platforms. For years there's been talk of buying Xamarin, but this is even better. Open source devs trust Miguel de Icaza and this keeps his independence whilst spreading .Net wider. Smart move.
