Microsoft's research division believes that glass could be the ideal material for large-scale data storage that can effectively last forever.

But isn't glass a very slow moving liquid...

I wonder if that laser tech can overwrite the data that are already on the glass, so that the information can be updated. Or perhaps this tech is only intended for finalized data like books, songs, movies etc... But either way, such a cool invention!

I wonder who they stole this technology from?

Microsoft’s research division believes that glass could be the ideal material for large-scale data storage that can effectively last forever.

Or.... until the glass cracks or breaks.

However, it could help offset the impact of data centre storage by clearing up capacity on drives that could be used for applications and information requiring a faster turnaround.

And we will be going back to the 1980's where it will be slow as hell.

Now bring it to mass market. There hasn't been a storage revolution in 20 years.

wait till it cracks/scratches like a CD/DVD of old
I'd like to know how strong this glass is as well?

“You can put it in boiling water, you can put it in an oven. You can even scratch the outside of it and it’s going to be able to keep that data stored inside of it, completely safe,” Rowstron said.

I remember IBM or another company had an invention like this that just went quiet years ago. Holographic storage. They still demoed storing a few megabytes in a person's nail. I suppose now's the time to capitalise on it
