Microsoft Surface beats iPad display quality

Microsoft hedged their bets at every avenue. I can't see this working for them.

I wish someone as MS had the balls the put their Windows team it is place and actually do something new.

In the looks department iPad wins tho. I somehow suspect the Surface will be a good alternative, if the price is not prohibitive of course.

Well looks are the only factor you want then stick with your pretty ipad. Damn if surface can run corel draw, photoshop and so on i will buy one.

Tablets are great but they are rather limiting. Out of the office i must my laptop. Bring me a touch screen pad that can like my desktop pc and i will buy

The more I see and hear about the Surface, the more convinced this is going to be a major challenger in the US. That is, until Apple sues Microsoft for some trivial technology that Apple thinks they pioneered.

It can't. Surface Pro, released later in the year at a much higher price, can.

That's where the higher resolution screen is critical. Unless the software developers create special 'tablet' versions which will defeat the purpose.

What percentage of Surface preorder buyers do you think realize that they can't run Photoshop or CorelDraw? I think like killadoob they're excited and just put money down and are going to be in for a deer in the headlights 'my new wife used to be a man' experience.

Surface pro could be amazing... or it could be rubbish.

In the amazing scenario, the Surface Pro offers better performance than a laptop of equal price and all the apps are perfectly adjusted to the touch screen.

In the rubbish scenario MS charge a high premium for what is essentially a modular laptop with closed system specs with no choice of upgrades. Which has lower specs than most laptops in the same price range. Software for windows 8 like photoshop/ CAD, is not very functional on a touch screen which forces you to use a mouse and keyboard... which basically means you could have just bought a laptop.

I hope it's amazing and that MS realise what they need to do to make it a success... i also hope software developers are already working on adapting their software to the new touch screen.

Yip, many of them. Hopefully Microsoft has a boat load of quality metro apps waiting in the wings for launch, because the current set of apps leave a lot to be desired. As attractive as metro is, the apps so far have been fisher price esque. Things like the store have way too much wasted space, with the broader tablet OS not really offering the kind of dense presentation of information needed to do actual work. It's all very demo like, with everyone falling in love with the sliding, snapping, and live tiles, but maybe not paying much attention to the limitations and persistence of the metro theme. So far it's just beautiful handcuffs.

I know apps will come which show us what's possible, and a lot will be possible, but for now i definitely won't be buying a tablet designed to only really function in metro. In six month it'll be awesome, but not now.

Also, how do you guys find the horizontal scrolling concept which metro apps seem to exhibit?
