Microsoft Surface tablet demand booming

I wasn't sayings you did. I wasn't sure, I remembers seeing the original Surface video years ago but it was a table top system.

They also demoed a Surface dual-screen tablet if I remember. There have been a lot of tablet prototypes and so on mocked up throughout the years but unfortunately it took one unnamed company to bring it into FRUITition ;)

Guys I might be like totally wrong here, but I think those pre order figures has a little bit to do with the OS it runs as well ? IDK

I think iOS is ****, and sure as heeellll won't be getting an ipad, even if it had 2 holographic virtual reality supermax retina displays, now that a tablet running the most popular OS ever is around the corner.

Not to mention that little known manufacturers like Samsung/Asus/etc are on the windows 8 tablet boat as well...

They brought a compromised version with a half baked os yes...not a proper tablet pc though.
In time I have no doubt that they will bring a proper osx version out also.

Perhaps the Pro will drive Apple to do so.

Not sure if don't understand tablets or just trolling

I can't pop in a SD card, via that clunky adapter, with MP3's on it and just copy that across to whatever folder I like, and listen happily to said MP3's.

iOS says my SD card is empty.

I'm sure I can download an app for it though...

No maybe you don't understand what i said go back and read it again, maybe have a cup of coffee first or some berrocca or some kind of mental stimulant.;)

How about you define what a "proper tablet" means to you.

As you like buddy. /Pats falcon on head.

It's always amusing to see people try to classify a 'true' tablet or Operating System or 'superphone' (or 'retina display'), as though the term isn't just a nebulous approximation.

Lets get back to the topic,Microsofts tablet failed because their idea of a tablet suits mine just fine,i.e a pc replacement that can do almost as much as your average pc can.

They failed because the tech was not there at the time to make an x86 based tablet pc a reality. Its here now, personally i'm not into this whole surface rt thing either...its another ipad/android tab competitor with office.Lets face it these are just phones with big screens.....The pro is where the future lies and I'm going to jump onboard ASAP.

Don't be surprised if Apple releases an osx tablet soon.

Let me ask you APPLE aficionados something, whats the difference between ios and osx?????

That wasn't why it failed. It failed because XP was totally unsuited for touchscreen use. As was Windows 7. Hence the whole thinking behind Windows 8 Metro. Hence Apple using their touchscreen-specific OS on the iPad, rather than their desktop-specific one.

They failed because the tech was not there at the time to make an x86 based pc a reality.
That sentence doesn't make sense. Much of what you say doesn't make sense but that sentence in particular plumbs some new depths. X86 based PCs have been around for decades. Perhaps you mean x86 based tablet?

Go you!

I don't even know where to start.

If you don't even know that why are we having this conversation?

I am going to guess a significant amount. Time will tell.

You don't know how this works, do you?

Apple sells out all their stock - OMFG, it's huuuuge

Anyone else sells out all their stock - what idiots, they can't even build that rubbish fast enough.

Selling out is good whether it's 100,000 or 10,000,000 units. It means it's exceeding their expectations.

So your proper tablet is a mobile x86 based device, instead of an ARM based device.
I'm guessing that's because you want to run all the apps you are already comfortable with instead of having to find equivalents.

It's the sort of scenario I'm avoiding because the battery life will be terrible and the app UIs will all have to be redesigned for touch anyway to be useful. Two simple examples of this: try playing Quake, Crysis etc on the touch screen when you get it, or run any regular Windows app that depends on right clicks, command menus, etc

I'm in the same boat as him, and I want x86 so I can pop a kb on it and it can be an ultraportable laptop. "convertibles" is what people are calling these. It can also run the new Metro apps. It's a no-compromise device.

It's the sort of scenario I'm avoiding because the battery life will be terrible and the app UIs will all have to be redesigned for touch anyway to be useful.

Battery life: Early tests show that Intel's Clover Trail gives as good or better battery life as the equivalent ARM part. The first Medfield phones blew the "battery life" concerns away, and Clover Trail should put them to death. In fact, guys at tech blogs like Anandtech speculate when the drivers are more mature, intel's mobile chips should outlast ARM chips of equivalent power. Intel is not to be trifled with. They're a worthy opponent.

UIs: You're assuming people want to use their tablet JUST as a tablet, and not as a productivity device via a docking station and/or clip-on keyboard. In both these scenarios having the classic desktop is a must, as you don't want to use Metro in a desktop environment.

Two simple examples of this: try playing Quake, Crysis etc on the touch screen when you get it, or run any regular Windows app that depends on right clicks, command menus, etc

Examples based on incorrect assumptions. Here's a better example: Evernote comes in desktop and Metro variations. Best of all worlds.
