I saw this in The Verge's Microsoft hub forums:

Microsoft Surface at US$199: http://engt.co/MxTsUD

My feeling is that while this may be a good price;
i. It doesn't seem likely and
ii. I think MS would be under selling.

If it does go for that price then I will definately be ordering one (maybe two) from the US since it will be available only online and in MS stores in the US.

Well, if MS wants to compete with the likes of Google & Amazon, they have to come out with reasonable pricing, but knowing MS, I have my doubts at $199.

Won't happen...

Google and Amazon are 7" tablets, not high end 10" tablets, they are not comparable.

It's the same strategy they used with the Xbox 360, they'll make a massive loss now, refine manufacturing and then start making a profit. Also they'll be looking to capitalize on the Windows Store, which will make up the loss as well.

Well in December I have everything planned tablet wise. I have my Android smart phone at the moment. Getting a Nexus 7 as my jack of all trades media tablet and the Intel MS Surface as my work tablet/ultrabook because I really want one of those keyboard covers.

It could be that MS is throwing in everything including the kitchen sink with this one. It currently has just 3% of the smartphone and tablet market right now and I think this price could be in order to gain market share more than anything else.

Remember, MS is a software company and they are probably betting that Win8 alone will more than make up for the possible losses - especially with their app store.

I think MS has enough leverage in this game to be able to offer their tablet at this price. What effect the use of this leverage would have on its OEMs is what I am concerned with.

It could also be that the RT would at this price while the Pro would be at a price much higher than that of the top of the range iPad.

You see I would buy this but after the announcement that the Lumia series will not receive Windows 8. It seems like its the same issue as when Windows 6 phones came out and was promised to get Windows 7 and then it was announced it won't receive the new OS. But it is a nice product for the price. We will have to see

No way on earth this is even remotely possible. This kind of report makes one wonder just what the originator's motives are - they must obviously know this is nonsense, so why put it out there?

They all but said it'll be iPadish in price, which puts it in the $349 - $399 bracket for an entry model, more for higher specs.

I think that there are going to be a lot of disappointed people when it launches at a much higher price!
