AFAIK you can just install Windows 10 and even if you don't pay for a licence, all that happens is a little message appears on the bottom right saying it is not a lisenced copy - it otherwise functions 100% normally.

yup i think you are right, mine functions perfect but you cannot personalise it by changing backgrounds etc. Otherwise it runs 100%
 
Should just release SP2. Less hassle.
 
Leave me alone, I'm just fine with Windows 7. 10 runs like crap on my laptop thank you very much.

Considering W10 adds things like compressed memory, fast boot among other things, a low-end machine will perform significantly better on W10 than on W7.
We feel obliged to add the additional caveat that we have targeted scenarios in which Windows 10 performance improvements were significantly better (rather than equal) to equivalent Windows 7 workloads. SysTrack Community data indicates that in some cases (such as the “locked down” case in the Shared segment above) Windows 10 devices with 1GB and 2GB of RAM, lesser processors than i5, and non-SDD storage vastly outperform their Windows 7 counterparts, so your mileage may vary–we encourage you to accept nosubstitutes for your own enterprise data.

Yeah I tried W10, and was playing Half-Life 2 at the time, and it went from a perfect game play experience, to literal stuttering with the picture not catching up with my mouse movements. It was terrible.

Not sure if it had anything to do with my drivers, because they were old, but it was the only way I could get through a certain section of the game (otherwise it froze), but I didn't wait to find out I just rolled back the installation.

Did you install DirectPlay?

And did you reinstall drivers after updating? It was hit or miss depending on what machine I had whether Windows decided to install their generic drivers or not, think it was probably dependent on what the install date of the old drivers were.

Nope didn't install DirectPlay.

Nope, literally installed W10 and tried to play HL2 and things were terrible. Jerky, and slow. And rolled back. Maybe I was a bit quick to rollback but it's done now.
 
I kind of like my privacy, for one. Also not interested in Win10 either as it's plain pisspoor ito user-friendliness compared to Win7 - well-suited to the few who have touch-screens as it appears as if this was the intended market?

I absolutely hate those @#$#@ tiles! And the pop-up messages!

I do have it installed on a separate drive though, so I could dual-boot to Win10 but couldn't be bothered.

Windows is absolutely crap for low end machines. As I wrote in my other post it's placebo on high end machines where you'd actually not notice a slowdown. My mining experience has been just terrible. Takes like a whole minute to boot and then it fools you by not having even loaded half the stuff so you can't do anything yet. Win7 was like 30 seconds and it was going. Actually added another 30 seconds delay there to make sure it was running smoothly. If it wasn't for the existence of Win10 AMD would have added compute mode for Win7 but no...

That's because you're running old hardware.

I'm fully booted with all background processes running in less than 20s. (Samsung NVMe Evo 960 SSD).

Has a read speed of around 3100MB/s compared to 100MB/s tops of a mechanical hard drive.

Yet it's supposed to be running faster on older hardware. It's not "old" as it was purchased new just over 2 years ago so Win10 can't even properly support current gen hardware.

You're also comparing apples and oranges here. Have to compare Win7 on SSD with Win10 on SSD. Not Win10 on SSD with Win7 on HDD.

No one cares for an OS that is 11 years old. (soon to be from a generation hitting 2 decades back.)

I'm sure XP runs faster on a Pentium III than Windows 10 does.

Windows 10 is fast enough for those that don't live in the past;

We were able to go from hitting the power button to opening the Windows 10 desktop in just 4.93 seconds.

That's a super long time tbh, I'm under 5s and 3s of that is the crappy BIOS. On my old HDD it used to be around 10-15s.

Agreed, but you don't have to use it?

If you mean start menu, none there. Just directly start typing for search. The ability to include searching things outside of libraries and desktop is a great "recent" addition:

Search is directly selected as input, so can start typing directly if you use that instead of searching for the setting directly in the start menu.

I just use keyboard shortcuts for everything, and W10 has made that easier, e.g. snip, win+k for bluetooth devices, virtual desktops, asf.
Problem is that productivity hit when getting used to it, same as if you'd try Mac.

W8 metro menu was horrendous though.

Btw if your response is that nobody cares for an 11 year old os then you're completely missing the point that each generation of os shouldn't be slower than the previous. But that's how it is with the MS bloatcrap.
