Microsoft updates anti-piracy tool

Sadly I still have M$ Windoze 2000 Professional kicking about - I'm the one being kicked and consequently screaming...

I recently wanted to upgrade from IE6 to IE7 in my genuine licensed installation of W2KP, and went through windowsupdate.microsoft.com and a new WGA ActiveX control version, and after much frustration [especially since my ADSL was still vrot], I eventually discovered that IE7 is not available for W2KP - only heXPee and Vista...

Another problem I have with M$, and its Windoze Update service, is that it requires 100% international internet access - there is no locally accessible Windoze Update mirror server - I have up to 28GB of local ADSL to burn each month and if I want to keep my W2KP up to date and experience the unenriching lack of IE7, then I have to blow my international cap to do it...

Ubuntu Linux has locally hosted updates [not all - but most updates are downloaded locally].

Maybe I should try running IE6 & IE7 in WINE - I only need IE6 & IE7 for browser compatibility tests - other than that I don't want or need Windoze.

*sigh* and there are people who actually pay to get someone to come remove their WGA nag screens.... Microsoft - oh so clever!.

as an opt-in download
At least it's opt-in I suppose.

Most importantly, we want our customers to realise the massive benefits of genuine software,

Getting patches to fix glaring holes and bugs in OS's isn't all that much of a benefit thanks.

It really is just paying to get rid of nag screens isn't it?

bah@microsoft! i guess they just want to protect themselves? and in the process alienate their customers some more

“The Business Software Alliance reported that, in 2004, an incredible 35% of software in South Africa was unlicensed, pirated, or counterfeit. Additionally, many users of counterfeit and unlicensed software are not aware that their software is not genuine,” continues Hatchuel.

First off...... if the figure of piracy is only 35%, then we doing very well!!

Secondly, and more importantly, where can BSA possibly get this figure from???

The BSA are a joke and regularly pull figures and statements from their arse.

I also think that figure is a load of $#%^ - I'd like to know where they pull that figure out of! Its probably the same place Ivy pulls her stats from...shudder!!

The only way you can eradicate piracy is to lower prices, everyone knows this except BSA partners.

Make the prices affordable to South Africans not Americans. If you earned $3000 a month then $150 for windows isn’t allot, but if you earn R3000 a month, R1000 is a third of your salary.

If Windows was selling for R300, I would buy it, but no way am I paying R1000 for an OS, just so that I can play games. (and I’m not talking about solitaire or freecell…..)

O and Linux is great, but try and get the latest commercial games for it.

only heXPee and Vista...

Why do you bother typing every single company or product name that you don't like in some stupid form.. to "mock" them...

I've noticed you really go out of your way with this, not once will you type Microsoft or Telkom Internet or anything. Sorry about swearing there..

What exactly is heXPee anyway? btw you should make one up for Vista already... Its the absolute collectors edition of things to hate. :)

heXPee is soos liewe heksie se piepie EHV! HeksPIE! :D ;)

Moenie lelik wees met ic nie man, ek hou van hom!

O.... lol, ta.

Sorry, it sounds a bit worse typed than its meant to... maybe some smiley's should go in there...
