This week I formatted three separate hard drives and installed legal copies of Vista on two and XP Pro on the other.
I used my internet connection to install all the required updates and used a total of 518 Mb.Bang goes my cap on my 2 gig Telkom account!
Does Microsoft or someone else not have a site that we can access locally do download there updates?

Two words... Autopatcher XP

Google it, download it and enjoy. Say goodbye to windows updates.

Damn it!
Saw now that Autopatcher has been shut down!
MS #@$#$#@$@#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate them more than ever now!

If you guys are desperate, you can buy a local only account, and split your traffic using routesentry. The ISP's cache the updates, so the updates themselves go through the local account, while the connection to windows update happens through your international account.

edit: at least that's what I've observed on my computer, though I don't see why only some updates would be cached?

What I have experienced with regards to this is that when your PC updates automatically I can updated my PC even when my Intl cap is finished, but I cannot connect to the windows update site. What I have also noticed is that the updates I download don't count towards my cap. At first I thought its not possible but its the case every month!! Special updates lake a SQL Server SP or Visual Studio SP will count towards my cap and can be a mission to download, but updates that every user should install is generally not a problem to download and is mostly free.

Edit: Oh and technically speaking, the SP's are not allowed to provide a local update service as it is not allowed to the license of the update.

Microsoft don't even have the content of the MSDN website available for their own employees in SA so why would they mirror the Microsoft Update site for us? It would cost them a fortune! And also, its not their problem that Telkom is ****, MS can't be blamed for that!!!
