Microsoft Windows 8 plans leave Nokia hamstrung

while it is plainly obvious that Elop is in MS's back pocket. He should be in jail already, I don't think anyone has destroyed a company that fast before
Wow, what personal animosity you display - all born from your ideological antipathy to the enemies of your 'friends'. That's just where your own credibility follows down the same hole you think Elop is taking Nokia. Not only does your comment evince ignorance, it's slanderous. Poor show, mate.

Nokia execs and senior tech people have said on several occasions that they seriously considered Android and specifically rejected it. The reasons are obvious to anyone who follows the industry:

Nokia could not go with Android.

Not after the infamous quote by their former CEO : "Using an Android phone is like peeing in your pants for warmth".

It must be one of the most arrogant quotes ever - and one that costed Nokia dearly.

The day ol' Elop sent out the infamous "burning platform" email, Vic Gundotra repeated the stupid Finn's words via Twitter.

So how is Nokia better off going to Microsoft? For each and every phone they manufacture, they'll pay royalties to Microsoft, while Android would have been free.

I honestly don't see the difference where they are now and where they could have been.

Poor comments by someone who is clearly out of touch with reality. Damn maybe it's the ex-Nokia CEO on the forum? :p

I wish I could buy that Nokia hardware with android. It would be my next phone, but I guess Samsung will take my money until they wake up. Either that or they will be de-relegated to the likes of Palm and Crackberry.

+1

Wow how anyone can not read Arthurs posts and see the logic in them is odd.

To even think that Nokia were not aware of this move 12 - 18months ago at LEAST is beyond me...

I work in the software industry and we're aware of the moves Microsoft is going to be making at least 12 months in advance...

So you knew about the Surface & Windows Phone 8 almost 18 months ago and you kept it to yourself?

Bloody agent. :D

Who is making money from Android? Only Samsung.

Quite a few - HTC, Huawei, ZTE off the top of my head. True, they're making less and less as Samsung dominates the market. But they are running at a profit and companies like Huawei are starting to pick up Android momentum.

Edit: And Microsoft, via licensing fees. But I don't think that's what you meant :)

Not HTC. See:

As for Huawei and ZTE, it is impossible to say.

Google is over $12 billion in the hole on Android so I didn't think they were worth mentioning.

Huh?? Facts to back it up?

Well, at the moment they're making more money from iPhones than Android phones with Google Search, but I'm sure that will change in the near future.

Don't forget that Android is the nr 1 mobile operating system in the world today.

Bought patents and court fees.

I don't see the patents as a loss, but rather a long term investment.

Still amazing that Google is willing to go through all this crap, but if they didn't, we would have lived in an iPhone dominated world today. Heaven forbid.

Yes HTC. That graph reiterates what I said - they made a lot less profit, but still a profit. And no, it's not impossible to say for Huawei and ZTE - they're both running at profits for their Android departments, but have also reported massive drop in that profit. LG, on the other hand, is posting stronger profits from their mobile division, as Android is deployed on more of their phones.

I'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere here, but I really don't think Nokia was "schnaaied" by Microsoft.
Before moving to the WP platform I guarantee that they would have asked what the plans were for the next iterations.

Well to the defense of both Nokia and THC when I look at those profits some people normally run to, I view them in a different light.

As an end use, all I see is companies that don't rape my wallet so I would rather pick one of the low profit ones, As a stock holder I will pick the opposite.

Yes I know all that jazz about survival in future but to be honest seeing that I am only gonna have the phone for 1 or 2 years I do not really give a crap.

Unfortunately different division to what we normally deal with but the NDA's are usually tight as all hell anyway... So I'll claim the "Bloody Agent" tag :D

Dozens of partners had to know about the Surface for months and months in advance. Parts don't design and assemble themselves! Really surprising the MS kept it secret from the media and public so long - the whole industry seems so leaky these days, I can't remember last time an Apple product, known for their secrecy, was launched without a few parts having been leaked by partners.
