Microsoft Windows 8 plans leave Nokia hamstrung

The one issue with this is that the app developers may want to code their apps for Windows Phone 8 only, to make full use of its features and services which wont run on Windows Phone 7.5 or 7.8 phones.

To use the single core excuse for not providing Windows Phone 8 for Windows Phone 7.5 phones is just lame.

it seems that if you don't have an os tied to a wider ecosystem, you're pretty much bending over and taking whatever the big three tell you to do.
if google can't get a foothold in the desktop OS or market, or make better inroads into corporate networks i fear that their phone os may soon look pretty lonely.
i think we could see what was going to happen with wp8/rt. it's just not great timing for nokia.
and i don't think ms making their own tablet was a very friendly signal to oem's either.

Yep, the signal we're getting from Microsoft is essentially "we're killing Windows Phone 7 now". Ecosystem-wise, Windows 8 looks really promising, but without clarification on whether (or how easily) apps built for Windows Phone 8 will run on WP7 I am also worried this.

I for one would think twice about getting a Windows Phone now until Microsoft clarifies what will be backported, and what kind of app support WP7 users will be given.

And Nokia users especially the Lumia 900 etc series that was just released. Get the vasoline because you just got fscked!
 
At least in the Android world you don't miss in features because of the lack of upgrades also you can take matters in your own hands and flash your own phone.

Not the same with the other devices.

As for Nokia banking everything on Windows phone, must really hurt when Microsoft gives all your toys to your competitors. NOKIA drive I am looking at you.
 
Yup, I will seriously be looking at Windows 8 as my desktop OS when I have a Surface tablet and Windows 8 phone.

If Microsoft must revoke licences to HP & Dell, they're pretty much screwed. Wonder if it might not happen one day, where Microsoft start operating like Apple....

Nokia's share price is classed as "junk shares" at the moment, maybe a perfect time for Microsoft to buy the company?
 
Well it was pretty obvious 2 months ago when MS skirted the issue that WP7 owners would not be getting WP8. Although I remember some of the WP fanboys assuring me that they would be rocking WP8 in a few months time. WP7 was pretty much just a beta

But I'm sure they'll get their money back when Windows Phone 8 gets released. If it looks similar to the Lumia 800 design-wise and has a quad core heart beating inside, it would be the first Nokia phone I buy again since 2001.

And the Lumia 1000 will most probably come with a 100 megapixel camera, just to sweeten the deal. :p
 
It still surprises me the way that all the other phone OSs seem to completely ignore even 1 year old hardware... I mean, yes I love my iPhone 4s, but at least the iPhone 4 gets most of the new features, if there is a hardware reason for not being able to do something well like Siri, then they just don't get that feature, at least Apple don't tell their users, suck it up boy, you get nothing.
I mean even the iPhone 3S at least can Install the newer versions of the OS, yes it might not get things like the 3D maps and Siri, but at least you get the OS.
Have a look at any graph of the Android OS fragmentation, its crazy. I feel sorry for Android users that cannot get the newest OS. I t would really irritate me.

Your telling me that Siri, if available, would not run on an iPhone 4? Lol

Apple is deliberately not giving you these features...

And as everyone here stated, just load a custom rom to get the latest and greatest, even the Galaxy S1 has ICS in custom flavour. Atleast we're able to do it through choice, unlike Apple customers.
