Microsoft Windows 8 Release Preview

Isn't that what people said going from DOS 6.2 to Win 3.1 :)

from the change to windows 95 I've always thought Microsoft improved their OS's (with the exception of Vista). IMO this new win 8 really sucks and takes longer to navigate than Win 7. People can continue to be "OMGDGG learn teh new OS you noob" that kind of sheepish mentality wont change my opinion and that is that the new OS is slower to navigate than the older ones. I don't want a pretty looking OS that happens to be less practical, there's no point in that.

I played around with it for about an hour yesterday, initially I thought it sucked, but after about 15 minutes I got used to it and then I actually started enjoying it, need to play more, I think it's still rough around the edges and IE 10 takes some getting used to as well. I think having the right hardware will make a big difference for the interface

Why should one upgrade to Windows 8? I do not like the tiles interface thing, i think its rather awkward to use on a computer with no touch screen. I heard they were going to take off the windows aero thing. Is that true?

Installed it but there is one thing that irritates me. I use multiple monitors (laptop and external) and in CTP the windows tiles and apps would appear in the screen I set as active. Now in RP irrespective which ever screen I set as active it only shows on my main screen.

I have the same issue... worked in the previous release but broken in this one.

Also some programs that worked previously now not as well.

I am a tad disappointed with this.

Got it working.I restarted and when it came on the Metro stuff was on the screen I wanted. So set the screen you want to to show the Metro stuff as the primary and then restart. It doesn't work on the fly anymore like the CP.

It forgets my main screen preference when I resume from standby / hibernation or log off and on again. Grrrrr.

I am also getting "Explorer not responding" issues... never had any of this nonsence in the CP release.

Irritating.

Store is also not working or giving timeouts. Maybe it's just my slow connection.

My taksbar refuses to go away when watching fullscreen flash vids.

I had less bugs with CP.

Read the previous Windows8 threads. Like anything new either learn or go back to windows 3.11 special edition.

As an admin for linux and windows systems, Windows 8 is a PITA. Microsoft is saying Metro is the future? Thank goodness I have Linux and OSX. Windows 7 was close to perfect, and It's a joy to use. With Metro, Microsoft still have not addressed core issues for power users.

Can I have more than one metro app on the screen at the same time? Ever followed a how-to and used copy and paste alot?
Two terminals open at the same time, comparing output of two different systems?
Working on one app while monitoring the other for a task to complete?

This is all functionality I already have, that Microsoft has decided to take away. We need proper desktop window management with Metro, that doesn't suck when using a mouse. It's not about refusing to learn something new, it's about something new being crippled. I know the desktop is still there for traditional windows management, but that's not the point. They are pushing Metro has the way forward, but Metro has a way to go. I don't mind metro apps, they work and look good. But why do they need to be full screen or docked into a crappy sidebar? We are not running tablets!

Running the new version on latest VMWare Workstation and apart from the usual start menu gripe. I'm quite impressed. It's a lot smoother with non touch interface, a big step up from consumer preview.

A workaround for lack of start is to pin apps to the desktop taskbar, but obviously that will only work with a limited number of apps.

Thinking about it, the real problem is that items in the start page are no longer grouped and accessible via a menu-driven system.

The Start page quickly becomes unusable when one has to scroll forever to find an app.

Adding a menu system will make this a really nice OS. Let's hope that Microsoft does something about it.

I really don't get the complaints about the missing start menu.

Seriously people, if you want it just install http://lee-soft.com/vistart/ or one of the million alternatives out there.

Its taken away sure but its not like you can never get it back.

Edit: they even have themes to make it look more fitting for example http://lee-soft.com/skins/startmenu_skins/metro_vistart_windows8.html

Yes that is possible, but with respect, a techie solution. The great majority of PCusers are seriously technically challenged and totally disinterested on solving this type of problem.

In this day and age an OS cannot rely on 3rd party add-ins to solve very basic design problems.

In the corporate environment even a missing icon renders the user totally non functional.
