Midstream Estates ADSL problems

Impressive! Tell me, what about shaped vs unshaped?

I am divided between getting capped vs uncapped, but see that they differ in terms of shaped vs unshaped.
I was thinking 30GB would be more than enough for me.

I was told that the uncapped accounts are shaped, but haven't experienced any shaping whatsoever since I got the line in September.

The Smart Village guy was finally here on Tuesday for a site survey.
Apparently the line is already in the house since my intercom had already been installed the previous week.

I asked for an extra point in the house so that I can have a better choice of where to put either the phone or the router.

The extra point is a luxury, so I can leave it for now.

I fell backwards when I got the quote from Smart Village today:

Additional point: R830
Routerboard (non-wireless): R555
Setup and Configuration:R650
Consumables:R57
Total: R2092

As I said, I can drop the additional line.
Do I have to take their modem? Can I not use my existing TP-Link router? TL-MR3420, its got a WAN port, 4 LAN, and wireless and 3G USB port.
I don't know if SmartVilage connection in the house is fibre? So not sure if a special Router is required if my existing router is not sufficient?

Then other thing: I am an IT person myself, so the R650 for Setup and Configuration is insane. I am sure I can manage on my own. Will they allow it and can I insist on self-setup?

Looking forward to hear your recommendations!

Regards,
H

I also tried to use my own router and self-install, but SmartVillage wouldn't budge. I finally had to get "their" router and let one of their technicians come and do the installation. It's a bit of a hastle and extra cost, but I've never regretted doing it. The line is just awesome!

Thanks, this confirms the situation.
SV replied just this morning saying more or less what you said here.
They won't give out the details for configuration that apparently 1400 users here use.

So I suppose the router is very closed and will have login credentials known only to SV?

I hate going with their non-wireless option since it just requires another powerplug and extra messy cabling for a wireless router.
Apparently there is a wireless option, but they strongly advise against it as it is not able to boost signal.

I have to admit I am frustrated by the limited options I have, regardless of how good the speed is or how happy and satisfied you are.

But I guess I'll just have to budge on this one :(

I must agree. the situation is not ideal. The router configuration and login credentials are indeed a tight kept secret by SV. I requested access to my router because I need to forward ports, but was given the runaround by SV and to date they haven't given me a concrete answer on this. One has to wonder about the infrastructure of the network if they can't event implement some type of Radius authentication on the network, but as you said... our options are limited.

I've got a 4mb uncapped line and I get 4mb/s upload and download speed. It's better than my previous 4mb ADSL line.

Just mail [email protected] and ask for an application form.

I tried to find pricing on their website but couldn't find it. What does the 4MB/s line cost?

Aag flip, that is not good news. :(

I'm currently paying R889 per month for the 4mb uncapped package.

If you speak to the right person, you should be able to get your login details as well as access to your router.

So who is the right person?

The guy who did the setup at your house :)

Can you do international speed test as well? And how much do you download each month?

Averaging about 100GB a month.

Hi, is the data cap from 1st till 28/30/31 of the month?

Reason I am asking is because our Smart Village package was activated on 24 Feb, and it seems like we were allocated an amount of approximately 15GB.
We signed up for 40GB per month.

I am not sure if the prorata is from 24 to 28 Feb? Percentage wise it does not add up.

Hope someone can shed light on this?
