Migrating from Afrihost Business Uncapped - Need Advice

DSL then yea WA plus Telkom is all choice you have VDSl you are still going to need telkom

All you can do otherwise is check and see if you qualify for Cybersmart's Fiber.

Otherwise you need to look for WiFi, LTE etc. Very expensive

I am on web africa business 2meg uncapped and so far it has been very good. Afrihost was good but they have packetloss and that kills me. Current network issues aside their network is pretty ok for streaming in my opinion but I had an 4meg uncapped + line. Gaming is very dodgy on afrihost with packetloss bulelts don't hit and your character will skip a second of movement sometimes.

CW as soon as they fix their network and offer customers a discount on a month's internet then I would maybe go with them. CW network issues have been more severe and prolonged than afrihost. With horrific local game lag and packetloss and no effort by them to make the customer happy.

Openweb is dead during the day. Even their capped suffers from speed issues during the day.

Telkom on my second line is actually ok... streaming is fine and gaming is low latency 24/7. I can't get it on my main line for reasons...

Mweb uncapped premuim is also good.... "good" as long as seacom does not die again. I left them because the massive issues with their network back in the day. My friend has it and it seems to be working well but local pings are higher than telkom.

With webafrica right now: 480p streaming is fluid, gaming has stable 25ms pings and downloads rock so far...

Thanks. The only problem is that my line is my problem lately, and I need to bypass that somehow - which is clearly not a viable option in Africa, for gaming.

Oh, the irony, since it's unstable as **** lately, with them taking more than a week to fix it.

If you have godly reception on one of our mobile networks you might be able to game acceptably, but that's not common. You could search for some WISP options, but they generally have high prices and limited coverage. Best bet is to weather the storm. DSL is by far the best value for money when it comes to intense gaming and downloading.

OK. Time to revive this thread.

So after Afrihost improved their performance, after over a month of struggles, I cancelled my ISP cancellation with them, and gave them another chance.

Since last weekend, I have had a problem with my line keeping disconnecting. Online gaming has been a nightmare, and downloads need to be restarted all the time. This is due to a fault that Telkom seem to be unable to resolve.

Thus, I am pretty much at the end of my tether with having to be dependant on these entities, each trying to be more useless than the other. So, I am asking: is there any option that covers the following conditions?

- Not dependant on Telkom
- Unshaped/Unthrottled
- At least 2Mbps
- Doesn't cost an arm and a leg
- More reliable than 3G

Any options out there like this?

Thanks in advance.

Don't keep your line with the ISP, start the process of moving the line back to Telkom.

Hopefully AH haven't logged any faults (so no open faults), then PM TelkomZA with your story (leave out your frustration), they are jacked up, and will get a straight answer.

This is all assuming your line behaves the same on all ISP accounts.

Why would you move your line back to Telkom? All you'll be doing is increasing your monthly bill, as Afrihost and most other ISP's charge less than Telkom for line rental. In the case of Afrihost you lose even more because the Clientzone lets you reset your own port and resync your own line.

Just because your line is with an ISP doesn't mean you can't deal with Telkom directly if you so desire. I've called them up before when my line died and I knew it wasn't an ISP issue. They sent a techie over within 48 hours who repaired a section of cable outside the house. They've never once cared that my line is managed by Afrihost - they just ask for my landline number and get on with dealing with the issue at hand.

I guess you're right, you can deal with Telkom yourself, the only reason I suggested that is some people deal with the ISP introducing a middle man which slows things down a lot. If your line was with Telkom, you could log a dispute with all your fault ref no.s and claim a discount.

Then I would keep logging faults online with telkom.co.za until the problem is fixed. What does TelkomZA say?

Good luck changing ISPs. When an ISP has your line they always have issues when it comes time to move. Leaving your line with Telkom has always been the best idea. Especially when you can call for a line discount these days. The small amount you save isn't worth the hassle.

I also want to know?

I mean Afrihost basically paid for my line for the month of December because of the November issue

And what discount is that?

Think it's the 25% discount one can argue for from cancellations on 10210, but it's a bit hit and miss depending on who you speak to on the other side of the phone, rinse and repeat if you don't get lucky.

Not bad, but personally I get better compensation from AF handling my line and..... It's a lot easier speaking to Afrigenie than toe spell my name 4 times to the telkom bot on the phone.

There's no way Telkom is dishing out 25% discounts to line rental willy nilly. Do you have the discount? Considering how few people will manage this it's hardly an argument for Telkom.

I've changed ISP's when my line was managed by them. You can't be charged twice in the same month for line rental, so it doesn't matter if the line takes a few days to transfer. Afrihost actually phoned me after transferring from Mweb to welcome me, say that they can see the pending transfer request and that I don't need to worry about a thing.
