Mike's (non-Sunsynk) System

So from them till now we have an approx 30% increase. Insane!!!
Not really 30%. Those are 2nd life batteries. There's no way that 1st life batteries cost R56k for 15 kWh, even 2 years ago...

So when the domestic is here and there's cloud in the afternoon, the batteries only get charged to like 85% by evening. It's 13:00 now and even though I generated 22 kWh so far, the batteries are only at 54%.

So now it looks like I need more panels. FFS it never ends...
Many people don't appreciate the levels one needs to go to be absolutely off-grid and be independent, without compromise, on Eskom.

For a single household with a family.

Just placed my order.

I'm starting small, and will expand when I better understand my usage patterns, and add batteries and panels accordingly.

Earliest date I could get for installation was 8 May .

Price is not bad. I have similar. One 5kwh battery is not much for that system. You’ll probably need it to be 100% charged by the grid for the 4.5 hour loadshedding. I started with two batteries and have just ordered a third.

Only two vendors out of about 12 bothered to get back to me and arranged a site visit, DRES and Solar Advice. DRES installed a system for a friend of mine and he's very happy with it and the after sales support. Solar Advice I saw mentioned here on myBB and their quote came in marginally higher than this one. I was impressed with their knowledge and professionalism. Ultimately I went with DRES because they don't charge for any additional callouts eg. Adding a battery or extra panel and their team isn't outsourced like Solar Advice. Having a friend recommend them swayed my decision more than anything.

If you think the installation dates are insane, you should see what the lead times are to get a site visit. It's like 2 months minimum!

It's almost certainly underspecced. We're going to have to have a serious change of habits in the house.

It’s not an off grid system, but you should be good for Stage 6 to 8.

What's the C rating on those batteries? If it's 0.5 it will kneecap your system severely as your draw will be limited to half of the battery"s capacity during loadshedding.
Shotos can do up to 0.75C i think

Recommend 0.5C, max 1C. Maybe not the best choice when starting off with 1 battery?
It depends on how heavy a user you are.
My battery mostly just fills the void when I'm short on solar or carries the load during loadshedding.
All my heavy stuff is on non-essentials so during loadshedding im only loading up like 1000w max.
I also only have a 5k sunsynk which means that the 1C works fine for me.
I charge at 60a, discharge at 80a. Haven't had any overloads as yet.

If you have an 8k deye/sunsynk then you probably need 2 batteries but again depends on how much load you want to pull.

The only battery I'm aware of with massive 1.5C rating is Greenrich, but I haven't researched too much because I have something that met my budget and needs.

The installer recommended the Shoto. Said he's done over 300 installs with Shoto and hasn't had issues. My sister-in-law is getting the same system installed in April. Will be interesting to see how it works out for them. I don't have much heavy current stuff in the house. The only thing that would really be of concern would be the geyser.
