Hi there are there any Mikrotik boffins that can help me with setting up a wireless repeater. This is my setup http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9504/wifilink1.jpg site B must connect to Telkom dsl via eth1 (lan cable) to dsl router gateway 192.168.1.1 and must provide internet access to site C (repeater) and then repeat or bounce to Site A. Then site A provide internet access to the clients over 2.4 GHz?
This is the closest setup i can find http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Wireless_repeater dont think this will work because Site A also repeat and this is not included in the setup.
Please i would really appreciate if someone can help me with this setup, thanks in advance :crying:

The only guy here that I know would be able to help you is portcullis, but try protzkrog or any of the wuggers. They use Mikrotik as well.:D

I don't think your biggest problem is the connection part of things, but your routing.

Easy to sort out connection. Set site c to AP mode and type in a ssid like bbSiteCtoSiteB and ssid bbSiteCtoSiteA.
Set sites a and b to client mode, scan for the respective ssid, and connect.

Now, here comes the fun part.
First of all, how exactly are you planning to connect a 2.4GHz grid AND a 5.8GHz grid to the 411? Afaik, and correct me if I'm wrong, the RB411 only has 1 miniPCI slot.

Then:
You will need to decide how to do the routing bit. One way is to use, let say create /30 subnets from a private address range and route one to the other.
(This is the part where the real guru's will come out and tell me how it can be done better/ easier).

More detail to follow, if I'm on the right track....

Hey thnx for the help, at site A I’m going to use 2.4GHz CPE, RB-411AR, R52, 5.8 Grid (WUG-K1) The RB411AR adds a b/g wireless card to the popular RB411. Not only do you have a ready-made wireless solution, but also a spare miniPCI card slot for another wireless card. ( http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=49_78&products_id=779 ). So if i set Site B to client mode will it still be able to provide internet access to Site A through Site C ?

The client modes are not an issue. Simply put, one broadcast an ssid, another connects to it. It doesn't matter who is the AP and who is the client.

Well, afa the RB411AR goes, you should be ok.

I was just thinking now about using a bridge interface as the link between the wireless interfaces, but "real friends don't let friends bridge".

This allows only routing.

So, in this case then, and I'm only suggesting from what I currently know, you would have a private address range, let's say 192.168.1.0/24 allocated to your net.

On site B:
ether1- ip address 192.168.1.2/30
make the modem's ip as 192.168.1.1/30
/30 is subnet mask 255.255.255.252
wlan1 connected to site b: 192.168.1.5/30
static route: 0.0.0.0/0 via 192.168.1.1

On site C:
wlan1 connected to site b: 192.168.1.6/30
wlan2 connected to site a: 192.168.1.9/30
static route: 0.0.0.0/0 via 192.168.1.5

On site A:
wlan2 (5.8GHz) connected to site c: 192.168.1.10/30
wlan1 (2.4GHz) connected to office: 192.168.1.13/30
static route: 0.0.0.0/0 via 192.168.1.9

at the office:
wireless interface connected to site a: 192.168.1.14/30
ether interface connected to lan: 192.168.1.65/26
subnet mask for /26 is 255.255.255.192

You could effectively use a /26 network at your office. (network 192.168.1.64/26)
setup DHCP to hand out leases from 192.168.1.66 - 192.168.1.126. Default gateway being 192.168.1.65. Ie., route to 0.0.0.0/0 via 192.168.1.65.

Somehow, I feel that this method is messy, and that there must be another (better) way of doing this....

Other suggestions?

The only other thing I can think of doing this, is by utilising OSPF for the route calculations, but you don't really need to, as the routes are only really going one way.

Okay i also was thinking maybe to do a bridge between the interfaces, what do u mean by "real friends don't let friends bridge"? I picked up the stuff today at scoop. I found one guy that is a Certified Mikrotik Consultant he told me that he can do the configuration for me via the internet if i give him remote access to the 3 router boards. So i will do some tests and see if i can figure something out.

I will try your setup Atti2de and see if it works im still bit new to this winbox and router OS and the gui. I am use to the Linksys setup more simple but with much more limitations than Mikrotik hahaha. :eek:

Thanks allot for the help u people are great support . Will keep u posted, and if u can think of anything else please post it. :)

.

So on site C for example if i do static route: 0.0.0.0/0 via 192.168.1.5 will wlan1 and wlan2 speak to each other without being bridged ?

Im sorry to jump in. Frost I have a very similar 'challenge'

I didnt bridge. Gave each there own IP ranges just to make sure. Everything works except the routing.

I think you will have the same problem as I have. In relation to your picture and network.

My PC can route thru the network all the way to SiteB. It can ping the interface connected to the local subnet of the router.

But IT CANNOT !!!!! ping the router, hence no internet connection. We need someone with gosu routing skills to help here.

FrOsT,

I'm done with your design, except for one little thing.

Are you using the Telkom ADSL router as a router or as a bridge?

What is wrong to bridge everything?
I really do not like to over-complicate things and to bridge everything sounds like an easy way out for a point to point link.
