Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum (and I'm a woman - which unfortunately means I need some advice to avoid getting duped in the motor industry). I am looking to buy a car, and I really absolutely have to buy an automatic because I am just terrible on clutches and gearboxes and do a lot of stop-start traffic every day.

My issue is that my budget is only R85k and most automatics in that price range are ridiculously high mileage.

I would like to know what you guys think is 'too high' in mileage for an automatic?

I've been looking at a Honda Jazz with 130 000km on the clock...

What other makes do you recommend that could be good with high mileage - and how high is too high?

Help really appreciated - I am currently carless and wish to resolve this ASAP!

It depends on gearbox, and how the car the was looked after.

I would suggest Hyundai getz 1.6 auto, it has normal torque converter automatic gearbox, which is normally more reliable than the cvt boxes fitted in honda jazz.

That is not a problem for a Japanese NA car such as a Honda, my friend's is sitting well over 250k kms and it is not especially a well looked after car but it keeps on going.

Hmm that Jazz more than likely have the CVT automatic which was problematic and had many warranty jobs because of the thrumming coming from the gearbox.

If it's not making a noise while test driving it then you should be good to go.

130,000km is not what I would call high mileage so nothing to worry about.

What model year? 2006/2007?

well depend on the car i have 2 automatic cars,
Vito 115 CDI - 354000 no problem on gearbox yet (hat to replace an electronic switch on it once)
Smart four four - 171000 - had to replace clutch at 170 000 - problem with this car is the gearbox is not fully automatic, but a soft-touch semi auto ( 6-speed automatic (softouch plus), and in traffic like joburg, it is wearing out fast.

So check the type of Automatic gearbox in the car .

I will definitely look into this! Thanks! I have NO idea about any of this :/

This is what I've heard about Honda too! Thanks!

Looks like a goodie! Do you think it'd really be too slow and stilted?

I'm currently driving Honda Brio "manual" it's good car for city drive, for long distance it's a big NO and extremely too small. It's reliable little city car, but it lacks features like bluethooth, CD player etc. You only have AUX and USB. If you can live with a tiny car I would say go for it

Gah!

Its really not difficult to master a clutch, especially in a Honda/Toyota.

Improving your clutch skills will better you in the long run, if the gearbox breaks in an auto you will cry when you see the repair price.

Automatics (with some exceptions) are slow to react. Couple that with a low power engine and a car can feel pretty lethargic. They also tend to hunt for the right gear in more difficult circumstances.
I had an i20 rental with an auto box once, and it would keep a gear for about 5 seconds at a time as I tried to maintain 80km/h up a hill.

I guess you will get used to it, I just hate most automatics.

All these people suggesting bmw's .. if the budget is 85k then theres no chance she can afford it when something breaks on those bmw's
