What's happening to Milky Lane. The 2 in Centurion are closed and the 1 in Menlyn also seems to be boxed up, dunno whether that's renovation in progress or its closed down.

Used to be mine and the SO favourite.

Their service took a dive and their pricing went insane. KFC and MacDonalds cones started to taste better.

Seriously considering agreeing with you here, it has become very expensive.

I have noticed over the past few years they have been slowly closing down in different areas in CT too.

Sad. Used to love Milky Lane.

Sat down at Fourways with the kids to give them a treat. We waited patiently while the one and only lady flapped around. Tables weren't being cleaned. People sitting at tables waiting. I eventually got tired of waiting and left. And the waitress still looked upset when we walked out.

We went downstairs to the Spur (not my best). The service was instant and of a good standard. The kids got great ice cream desserts and were very happy.

Possibly why Milky Lane is slowly falling apart.

They not good enough, the ice cream is poor, the menu is only unhealthy, people with money don't like it, kids love it.
i like a good waffle, but to go there just for a waffle is not high on my agenda.
Most women won't go there.

There is a milky lane in kollonade, they have totally redone the place, its got a more "farm" feel, didn't have much chance to check it out, just saw it as i was walking by...

Used to love Milky Lane back in the day... way before this century.

But their waffles got smaller and thinner and soggier, and their prices got larger and larger.

And yes, their customer service went to heck.

We went to the Milky Lane in The Glen and the manager was blasting rock music out at the top of the range.
We couldn't even hear each other talk.
When we asked him to turn down the music he swore at us.
So we left. I think that was actually the last time I went to a Milky Lane.

Last time I looked at a Milky Lane menu a few years back I was disgusted at the prices. Wanting to charge upwards of R40 for ice cream is just sick. Sure, I understand overheads and the fact that they are a specialist restaurant but they won't attract a passing customer looking for ice cream on a hot day. You can get all those items off a dessert menu pretty much everywhere else for cheaper. That and Mcdonalds / KFC / Steers all have cones at a fraction of the price.

The problem is, the less they sell, the more they have to put up the price. Very vicious cycle for a once glorious chain. They should really try to attach themselves to other fast food joints with a specialist dessert menu with better prices if they hope to survive.

They have rebranded and it seems they are trying to revive the image, don't know how successful it will be though. But check their website out, looks nice and updated, so the store you saw that was boxed up maybe undergoing a revamp.

Thats a Juicy Lucy, Milky Lane closed down a few months back but will open somewhere else in kollonade by Jan.

Because they're crap. They buy in ready-mix soft-serve powder which costs them about R200 for about 50L of soft-serve. The soft-serve is pretty awful in itself and then they have the nerve to charge a fortune for the stuff. Their biggest expense is their electricity for the waffle-makers, and even then they simply buy in a pre-mixed batter powder which I'm pretty sure is not their intellectual property. They are the biggest rip-off in the food business imho. Them and Juicy Lucy...

The one close to me, changed their name and is still serving the same thing (the place looks the same as well), but they added Burgers and Chips and Ribs to their menu.

Milky Lane was taken over by Famous Brands about 2 years back. I would have figured they would rejuvinate the brand and bring about some change - but I am yet to see this happen. Sad, as they used to be fantastic. Service is pathetic and the hygiene standards seem quite poor.

I thought their prices are quite reasonable, my wife and I share a standard waffle with ice-cream, costs a whole crippling R20.
