Hi Everyone,

Will a 384 ADSL line work fine for Video Skype? I need to setup my dad with Internet so that we can skype once I'm in Australia...

Thanks!

384 is a little jerky, but it works OK. If that's the only reason for a fast line, just live with the video. After all, if you check your dad unshaven and in his pyjamas, do you really need high quality smooth video.

IMO video is overrated, I often turn it off even though I have a fast line (especially when I am in my pyjamas !).

Now, if you were chatting to your GF, that would be a different matter.

I guess Video isn't really required... But voice calls using skype is a MUST, that should work flawlessly right?

Flawlessly? Impossible. Your call is routed via the internet, which is a best-effort network, relying on packet delivery. Packets could get lost, or arrive out-of-order. There is little to no QOS prioritisation, or dedicated end-to-end circuits like with normal phone calls, which are generally ciruit-switched.

Nevertheless it should work pretty well, most of the time. ADSL is a good choice, coz the latency on wireless is very noticeable.

im confused

i have a 4mb line and the video quality was poor when I spoke to my gf in Canada...

As far as Im aware, skype automatically adjusts the video quality depending on the speed of the line... so if you got a 384K line, then sure it might be smooth, but it will get resized to 320x240 =

my gf had a 640x480 cam, but it did not come through in that size

I've yet to see skype running smooth on 720p (1366x768), which is becoming the norm quality these days...

I dunnno Im just confused now :wtf:
