Post Office shake-up — and the fight to take over online shopping deliveries

Communications minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has published the South African Post Office Amendment Bill for public comment, proposing to expand the postal agency’s duties and mandate.

It also takes aim at courier companies in an explanatory memorandum, bemoaning that private players do not have universal service obligations while the Post Office must ensure it provides services to all South Africans.

Wynberg post office had an armed robbery last week Monday. They've been closed since. I contacted to find out when they'd open and got this: "Honestly I am not sure when will they be coming back to work , it depends on the visits to the Psychiatrist they are seeing. They have to be certified fit for duty"

Understand it was a traumatic ordeal, but it's been 9 days now. "Fit for duty" - they're not fighting in a war. And post office can't get employees from elsewhere to open up in the meantime?

Basically what they're saying is that they're tooP0** useless to do anything so now they're going to force the ones that can do the work to do it for them and they must pay the post office for the opportunity to do it.

I'd put good money on the fact that any courier company actually comes closer to meeting the universal service obligations of the post office than the post office itself.

We need to start an official solution to this problem. We know its coming, the Gov want a slice of that courier pie by forcing it back to their failed state enterprise again.

Some suggestions I'm thinking of are;

Banks: when sending my bank card, increase envelope size and add some marketing trinkets.

Takealot and Similar: If the package doesn't come to 1KG for delivery, have thin metal or other heavy material plates made that line the package and increase weight. Have your logo put on it so it is marketing material. Or have your box manufacturers create boxes with more weight in the lining so its already close to 1KG before its packed. That way you guarantee it.

Courier companies can come to the party too by making the first 1kg of a package free but mandatory. In other words always Tare the scale to 0 at 1Kg with an empty box at 1kg (so its effectively -1Kg) and then bill the additional weight.

Come on, if we work hard together we can make cadres have more sleepless nights as they can't afford that Yacht!

The amendment also paves the way for the Post Office to use other players’ infrastructure:

“…continuously adjust its business model in line with the technological and industry developments in the provision of postal services and other services… including the roll-out of service points and the use of third-party infrastructure… subject to the approval of the Minister”.

The law also gives the Post Office a mandate to provide any service in response to the needs of users, consumers, and citizens.

It may “exploit the infrastructure capacity to extract value and forge partnerships with other stakeholders with the approval of the Minister”.
