JOHANNESBURG - Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs’ Minister Sicelo Shiceka yesterday expressed his full support to the proposal of the ritual animal slaughter at each 2010 Fifa World Cup stadium before the tournament.

Addressing the gathering of traditional leaders in honour of former President Nelson Mandela at Pretoria’s Freedom Park yesterday, Shiceka said slaughtering of cattle shows that “we are Africans”.

“I will take the matter up with the Congress of the Traditional Leaders of South Africa.

“As a member of the 2010 ministerial committee, I will also lobby to the world governing body, Fifa.

“The World Cup will be on the African continent and we will make sure that African values and cultures are felt by the visitors,” said Shiceka.

This follows the traditional leaders’ announcement last month that they were set to propose beast- slaughtering rituals at all the World Cup venues ahead of the tournament next year.

Meanwhile, kings, queens, senior traditional leaders and President Jacob Zuma honoured and paid tribute to Mandela for his outstanding contribution to reconciliation and nation-building, the first occasion in the history of the country and even in Africa.

Zuma welcomed the traditional leaders’ gesture of honouring Nelson Mandela.

It's still only a proposal, but will FIFA or the other sponsors actually allow this?
 
Isn't this one of the main reasons for giving S.A the WC. To promote Africa
 
fusk man s.p.c.a WWF greenpeace , knysna hippies etc. will freak out, also people came to watch footie not fusking poor man bull fighting.

There will be enough tourist blood shed via crime during the time, so leave them moo-cows alone

Maybe they should just buy the meat?
That way no animals would be slaughtered to provide that meat;) and the hippies are kept quiet...

open a steers branch at every stadium, save the hippies freaking out, create a few jobs etc.
 
Maybe someone should alert the likes of PETA of this so they can start a anti-2010 campaign :D

dude WTF!!

eating meat and public slaughtering is 2 different things, if slaughtering cattle is the main criteria to use to show the world "welcome to Africa" then it is very sad, what about dancing music etc.

For many people, there's a big difference between killing whales and killing cows - probably because cows are specifically bred for it and are perceived as less "intelligent" than whales or whatever.

Personally, I have a problem with the cow slaughter and the whale slaughter.

maybe those complaining think meat is manufactured at the butchery without actually harming any animals in the process.

It's not different at all. The sacrificed cows will get eaten at a celebration afterwards. You guys are upset because the killing is out in the open, and it's much more convenient to have your meat slaughtered in some obscure annattoir. Pout of sight, out of mind eh?

The issue here is not meat.

I love meat, how does having a problem with the public sacrifice of a cow have to do with whether I eat meat or not? Their reasoning for doing this is so that their ancestors would bless them.

Culture the enemy of progress(TIA)...

Just another case of history repeating itself. 60k years ago some humans moved out of this continent and humans advanced, while the rest were too ignorant to change their ways.

I have no problem with killing do my fair share of hunting - most visitors will be western christians and must now endure some pagan ritual - and as I stated if slaughering cattle is the only way to show the world that we are african then it is fusked up
