Hi guys.

I need a bit of help

I haven't been following camera releases for the last few years and have been happy to lug my DSLR where I go.

I recently found the need to get a new camera that is a bit more compact and like the look of the non-dslr shaped mirrorless cameras.

It will mostly be use for family pics and if I travel for business. I currently only have a 17 - 50mm f2.8 for the DSLR, so I don't mind buying into a different brand.

Budget is say R8k - R10k.

The most commonly available brands are Canon, Fujifilm and Samsung. Your choice will depend on whether you need a viewfinder, a good video mode and just how compact it should be.

If you need a viewfinder then it will most likely be a Fujifilm. The X-T10 and X-E2 are good cameras for the money. If not, then the Samsung NX500 is a nice one.

If video is important then someone else will need to comment, I have no idea.

When it comes to size you can also consider alternative ideas. The Canon EOS 100D SLR is smaller and lighter than almost any other SLR out there and rivals a lot of mirrorless cameras for size. You will have access to a wider range of lenses as well. Put a small prime on this and it will make for a compact package.

On the smaller end of the scale there are some high quality compact cameras like the Canon G7 X.

If you want to compare the sizes of cameras then go to http://camerasize.com/compare/.

Thanks,

I'm not too worried about video capability and I quite like the look of the Fujifilm.

How is the Canon EOS M3? Does anybody own one?

I've got the eos m, first series, and love it despite all of it's faults. I'd definitely get the M3 if anything should happen to the one I currently have.

Quite good reviews for the M3 and now that it's available locally it should be a definite consideration. Only problem is Canon isn't taking advantage of the mirrorless market with proper lens support. That may or may not change for good or for bad.

I think the 3 candidates for today ( it changes by the hour :-)) is:

EOS M3 (lenses and battery life is concerning though price is good)
Fuji X-T10 (bit out of budget)
Panasonic GX7 (2 years old now and stock a bit of an issue to find)

The only reason I went with the EOS-M in the first place is because I can use my existing Canon lens collection with it - not that I'm not a fan of the 22mm that came with it but the adapter they included in the kit gets a lot more use. (FWIW I also use the adapter as a means of carrying a second lens on my belt when I'm using my non-mirrorless bodies :) )

You can use any Canon lens with the adapter yes. But Canon isn't supplying a proper range of lenses for the mirrorless range. Maybe that will change when they have more than two or three cameras but they could have had good support already if they weren't so short sighted. Until they do they are losing out to other brands and it may be too late when they start as the whole market would have been captured already.

Fujifilm without a doubt. Incredible system. Amazing value lenses. Second to none build quality. X-T1 is the best thing I've bought in a while.

Canon is barely dipping their toe at the moment. Sure they have a range of lenses that covers most enthusiasts needs but they're not investing much effort into the "range" - and it's kind of hard to call one production body a range after all.

I don't see Nikon behaving differently come to think of it.

No brand has a lot of mirrorless cameras yet. Canon has two I can think of. It is still no excuse when others can do it. The only conclusion all of us can draw from this is that Canon doesn't take mirrorless seriously.

They should be. I'm sure they will when full frame mirrorless cameras start gaining momentum.

DSLR is dying, for many people, hobbyists and professionals.

So, after a lot of reading and researching I'm leaning more towards the X-T10, but with the 16-50mm lens as the 18-55 is just too far out of my budget. The pics taken with the X-T10 is really nice and I like the low light performance. It also seems like it has better battery life.

I went to check out the X-T10 yesterday and caved...
I haven't had a lot of time to test it out when I got home, but initial impressions is very good!

Congratulations, I am sure that you will enjoy it.

And now the lens acquisition begins ...

Fuji are really upping their game these days The XT1 and XT10 are superb and the Fuji lenses are in another league compared to Canon/Nikon, enjoy the XT10, great choice.
