Misunderstanding HDR?

Here's what I consider HDR - nice shadow and highlight detail - personal preference that's all.

BTW - removing the purple and green fringing took 5x longer than doing the HDR. What the heck happened there?

Might do another more surreal (what people tend to think of when they hear HDR) one next.

*sigh* maybe include steps on what you did? I already like yours more than mine :(

Where's the purple and green fringing? Could it be a result of the RAW -> JPG conversion?

Not sure what caused it - what glass were you using? That's one of the usual suspects

Here's a crop from IMG_1065:

Pretty hectic eh? Was there a filter on it?

Nope - only the lens hood.

Did a quick google, seems it does happen with the 50D and high contrast situations.

I see you can reduce it in DPP - how annoying.

Didn't even notice that

Was using the 17-85mm kit lens.

the 17-85 is not the kit lens
the 18-55 is
I think I told someone on here not to go for that (17-85) lens, but get the cheaper 18-55. Was that you?

I got these same colour fringing problems with the 17-85. I asked the shop, "how much?" Then I LOLd

That's just a bundle they do. The standard "kit" lens is the 18-55 . . but it (at least the II does) suffers from fringing too.

EDIT - the 18-55mm IS kit lens also apparently suffers from fringing - http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_18-55_3p5-5p6_is_c16/page4.asp

I think its one of the standard bundle options - I see its also offered overseas?

@OP: great source pics... damn! if only you could have caught some mist/fog in that light breaking through the trees!

Thanks - still learning my way around the camera.

I've had both 18-55 & 18-55II (first one's electronics broke)
Those two lenses did not suffer from excessive fringing, but my new Nikon 18-105 has non, on my camera.

Here is one of my HDR shots. Seeing this is an HDR thread, lets here the feedback. Positive and negative. Just for interests sake

Great shot Just_Ice, I love the slightly surreal look.

HDR from the top of Table Mountain using 8 source images, I seem to remember there was about a 10 stop difference between the city lights and the side of the mountain.

Green Point Stadium using 4 images and Qtpfsgui (and a lot of swearing to get the look I wanted) It looks amazing when printed at A0.

Anyone know if its possible to get the Canon 50D to take more than 3 Auto-bracket photo's at a time?

Not that I have found, I hardly use auto bracketing as I often need 5 or more images, and I will generally have the camera on a tripod for long exposures.
