How do you play mkv files without converting them on an iPad? Is AVPlayer my only hope?

Stream it from a PC over Wifi ?

My Personal setup:

1. On PC i use Tversity which is standard UPnP/DLNA server and can thus stream to any device (Xbox 360 etc). Tversity can stream .MKV etc.

2. On my ipad i have UPnP/DLNA client like 8Player or GoodPlayer (which can thus detect UPnP/DLNA servers on the network)

8Player link : http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/8player/id375860275?mt=8

You can also go alot further with something like this : http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/media-connect-for-dlna-upnp/id335036887?mt=8

Turning your ipad into a media server itself...

AVPlayerHD is a paid app that should do the trick or as already suggested, Airvideo does a very good job of converting on the fly. The added advantage of Airvideo is the ability to stream over your local wifi network.

That would have been my first choice, but I'm still deciding on whether or not I'm going to keep it, so trying to keep it all in once piece :p

Whu..? Keep it? Of course you're going to keep it. Trust me.

Besides if you do a full restore you will remove the JB in the unlikely event that you do not.

There's no jailbreak for it yet in any event, either tethered or untethered.

But why?
So far all I can think of using it for is as a portable screen (but only within my home network)
Random surfing, although I've been happy to do this on my phone until now
Playing games when I'm away from home

There must be more I can do! And even then, I might swap it for a droid equivalent (blasphemy! :p)

For streaming I use Air video, but on the move I use Azul. It plays everything I chuck at it including mkv iirc.

It's probably my most used app. Just copy the movies you want into it on itunes and no conversion or anything else needed.
