Mobile broadband pricing comparison

According to this table it is cheaper to get a 1GB package (R99 with modem) from Vodacom than a 500Mb package (R149 with modem). And it is cheaper to get 2 x 500Mb packages (2 x R69 with 2 modems) from Cell C than 1 x 1GB package (R199 with modem). Or am I missing something?

Having survived a number of shark attacks I am only interested in prepaid data (unless it is uncapped of course!) so only a small portion of the table interests me. Splitting the 24Gb Cell C prepaid deal over 12 months and comparing it with the other 2Gb/month offers gives an interesting comparison. You can likewise multiply the 2Gb packages by 12 to get a comparison.

Sticking to 2Gb/month: It makes me worry about a nation where people are still prepared to pay Vodacom 240% more for 2Gb of data. And yes, I do realise that Vodacom's data is valid for up to 2 months and that you have to pay up front for Cell C's for a full 12 months. The latter doesn't scare me - we did the same for a handful of 60Gb sims and Cell C didn't run away with our money.

I wonder how sustainable it is?

All I can say, is if it wasn't for 8ta's 10gig package, I would be severely screwed. Despite the odd reliability issue, this is by far the best offering out there if you're reliant on mobile data - I don't have access to ADSL where I live and I work from home, my bills would kill me if I had to try and pull this off with any of the other providers.

Promotions til' when? Sick of this not all of us benefit from promo's. Cell C offer smaller bundles for broke folks like me, 50MB@R10 valid for 2months or better yet make it 100MB@R10 Standard no promo

As a traveller coverage is a problem for me with Vodacom the only one really giving enough coverage. Pity or I would swop at the drop of a hat

by now, i'm sure most of us have a modem (probly several by now) so they can all do an offer without a modem to save on costs.
generally even the 7.5Mbps modem transfer at same rate as the socalled 21Mbps modems because of network capacity, so at least for the time being, depending on your area/s of use, an extra, extra-cost modem is just that :-)

So with the exception of Vodacom's 1GB and 2GB promotion their normal rates are so high that it boils down to pure greed. And look at the out of bundle rates from Vodacom! I was caught grossly out of bundle two months ago (new cellphone and apps running wild online) and there was not sufficient warnings from Vodascum and they made me pay for the massive data bill. NO wonder. This is just normal business for them. I wonder how much they make per month from poor customers running out of bundle. Greedy swines. *spit*

So in the end Mtn Uncapped lite is the better option because they give you 3GB at full speed and afterwards 256kbps (32KB/s) uncapped? Its like R96 per GB if you divide that by 3, but being uncapped and I suppose a user could easily do 20GB per month its more like R14.45 per GB. Sounds like better value for money to go for the uncapped option from mtn than the other ones.

Cell C has roaming agreement with Voda. If your network search is on automatic it should jump automatically or you should change it manually if you are in an area with limited or no coverage.

Hi Rudolph,

This article creating mass confusion, and I’m sure not just for myself.

Firstly there are two sections for “data contract”. 3 on top 1 at the bottom, with no visible difference between why it’s been separated.

Also the data-contracts, are those over a fixed term? What are the terms? Can they be had month-to-month?

I’m sure Santa is as disappointed as I am, at this stage.

Regards,

Just took a look at CellC's website: http://www.cellc.co.za/data-packages... somethings a-miss:

Under "PREPAID SMARTDATA", they offer 3GB + modem for R599, then under "PREPAID SMARTDATA– SIM ONLY" they offer 3GB excl. modem for R399. So that means you will be paying R200 for a modem. Then on the Smartdata 24GB prepaid + modem you pay R1999 once off for 2GB/m for 12 months. But for Smartdata 24GB prepaid excl. modem you pay R1299. This time you paying R700 for a modem! If this is the same model modem then people are being ripped off! Can CellC please confirm whether the packages offer the same modem and if not why the massive difference in price?

Figured it out for myself:

3GB package comes with 7.2mbps modem(zte-mf190), 24GB package with a 21.6mbps modem(zte-mf668)...

Isn't that agreement for EDGE only?

Does anybody know why on 8ta's coverage map, the "voice and data" 3G coverage differs from the "8ta network" coverage? What's the difference? Frequencies? Because supposedly you can only use the 10GB R200/m package on the "8ta network". My brother isn't in the "8ta network" coverage, but he has 3G coverage.

8ta is piggy-backing on other networks in some areas, whereas '8ta network' is their own infrastructure. That's afaik...

This is what an 8ta techie told me to do because in alot of cases the coverage map is outdated and his area may be covered.

Go to any 8ta/telkom direct store and buy a 8ta promo data sim card....make sure its the promo data one(i've told two people to do this and both still got the normal one that 8ta give to regular customers and then suffered later lol) not a normal one that roams on mtn.......so after buying the sim card for R1 you just buy a small data bundle or some airtime and when you get home you simply stick it in your phone and manually select one of the two networks listed as either 65502 3G OR SA-02 3G.Once activated then do some speedtests and check reception to see if its decent enough to take out the contract.
