Mobile data bundle pricing comparison: Cell C hits back

out of bundle rate ???

Sorry Cell C....but what have you smoked with those out-of-bundle rates of R2-00 ? Trying to be competitive doesn't mean you should make your OFB the same as Vodacom.

I have a question regarding the new Cell C 1Gb and 2Gb data bundles. Do they expire after 30 days or 60 days?

It is good that they want to be more competative on price per Mb, but if it expires after 30 days, there is really no point. Most of the Vodacom and MTN prepaid data bundle users I know purchase bundles with twice the amount of data they need per month, with the intension of using it over 2 months.
Maybe if we keep complaining it will (again) help to get Cell C more on the ball...

I hate to say it but Telscums offering is also extremely competitive, if not better, in the lower priced packages albeit at a lower speed.

I am quite certain you'll pay for the difference in frustration the first time you have to call Telkom's "support", also known as the "abuse and frustration line for masochists".

Why R2 and not at least R0.39 like the OOB on the "speed stick"/"data sim" things?

Because 86%* of South African mobile data users never buy data bundles.

*Yes, eighty-six percent! (Using Vodacom's published figures as representative of the whole market.)

with all these great data deals coming.its a pity we cant buy data from other operators and use it on our existing contracts?

Cell C should slash the OOB rate for prepaid by half and then make the bundle last for 60 days, that way their network won't get overloaded on the last 5 days of the month by people trying to use up all their data before they lose it.

According to the FAQ on the Cell C forum there is no rollover: data expires and is thus forfeited at the end of a calendar month, unlike the offerings from VC and MTN. My local Cell C rep (Rustenburg) insisted there is a three-month rollover, but I believe he is misinformed.

:D

Pity... would be great to get R29-a-Gig afrihost data bundles... :D

If you factor in line rental then it makes sense to get a cellc/voda/mtn 3g router with 2 or 3Gb's of bandwidth.

This will change should telkom decide to drop the forced analog line rental bundling with their adsl lines.

So here's December and still no sign of any response to CellC's data reductions from either VC or MTN. Getting close to crunch time for some of us to decide to jump ship from VC or MTN as current data bundles wind down etc. Several folks I know are buying a quick CellC sim and some data just to give the service (away from the dedicated new CellC towers) a try before committing. There have been some disturbing reports of slow throughput or data drops. Will be interesting to see whether Cell C publishes any numbers of those who have signed up for its new data service!
