Mobile data bundle pricing comparison: Cell C hits back

Those prices do nothing for me, well, except for leaving a bad taste in the mouth. Four hundred smackers for 3GBs is still unaffordable to the masses but therein lies the strategy I suppose. Allow easy access for the masses and in turn bring down your network. VC et al are breathing a sigh of relief now because those numbers are well within their range. No ground breaking, earth shattering event here. :)

I hate to say it but Telscums offering is also extremely competitive, if not better, in the lower priced packages albeit at a lower speed.

MTN and Vodacom won't do anything until Cell C's promotion ends... They probably have enough people locked in contracts and the money they're raking in on them probably offsets the losses to Cell C.

Why o Why are the OOB rates so expensive, specially for prepaid. Why can't they make the OOB the same price as your last in bundle price you paid e.g if your inbundle rate is R0,50 the make your OOB for that month R0,50 as well

+1 Yep, they are waiting for the promotion to end and they won't wait long

still R2/meg out of bundle, no roll over :-(
only EDGE in my area so no use to me.... sticking to adsl

@RPM: There seems to be a mistake in the table. Vodacom's 3Gb bundle costs R589 not R520.

The table compares Cellc to VC standard and not advanced offerings.
And the Standard 3Gb bundle costs R589, the Advanced bundle R799...

EDIT: Apologies - my mistake, those are the prices on vodacom4me.co.za, I notice it is different on vodacom.co.za. Amazing, isn't it?

The point here is that Cell C immediately responded to the VC's price reductions which means that competition is happening and driving prices down which is what we've wanted all along. Broadband will get to where it needs to be but it will never be quick enough for us

With FNB connect you can get 3G data for 17c a MB, and it's valid for 12 months. (2.3 GB @ R389).

I keep asking myself what on earth am i still doing on MTN?

Can i move my number over to another provider and stay on prepaid?

Vodacom advertised the activation of their 21Mbps network in the local newspaper last week. In Nelspruit for that matter. I dont hear a big fuss about it anywhere:erm: So CellC cant just rely on speeds only

8ta's bundles are on par with Cell C but 8ta's oob rate looks way more attractive.

This adjustment from Cell C is a small step in the right direction.

But why is Virgin Mobile still the only South African company to have a simple straight-forward data rate?

Yes it's expensive at 50c per MB (R500 per Gig), but unlike all the other players they don't muddy the water with a shed load of stupid tiered options. Apart from (possibly) a tiny amount for the extra admin, why should an 'out of bundle' rate or a small data bundle cost ten or twenty times as much per MB as a larger bundle? It's an industry-wide scam designed to fleece the section of the market least able to afford it.

I have a question regarding the new Cell C 1Gb and 2Gb data bundles. Do they expire after 30 days or 60 days?

It is good that they want to be more competative on price per Mb, but if it expires after 30 days, there is really no point. Most of the Vodacom and MTN prepaid data bundle users I know purchase bundles with twice the amount of data they need per month, with the intension of using it over 2 months.
