Erm just to point out some correction:

Google+ Messenger = Google talk so I don't see why its mentioned twice.
Its based on Jabber and your features depends highly on the chat client used.

Its also the only one in the lst that you can use without installing anything on the platform you are on, the local clients just make it easier to use, and sports Whatsapp like functionality ie: bring in your friends if you saved their contact details/phone numbers on your Google contact details.

What I also do find odd, is that Samsung's ChatOn sports all the features of Whatsapp and others, yet no one is using it locally. (I blame the colors ;) )

Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sec.chaton&hl=en
Iphone http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/chaton/id486344680?mt=8
I know it has BB client and last time I checked there was some news that it's being ported to Windows Phone, so yeah, might be something to watch out for.

I tried it...had no one as contacts...and iirc...i HATED the UI. bleugggggg.

True. For my purposes though that isn't a problem - government isn't the threat in this case. Technically gov can't break the encryption either...RIM specifically needs to hand over the info.

Third article is kinda hilarious:
by using BlackBerry smartphones seized by police, detectives were able to "break into" BBM
Way to go Scotland Yard. Really hardcore code-breaking there...

Yeah only had 3 Asian friends on mine, not one of em someone I would chat with on a daily basis and like I said, I blame the colors/UI :)

Whatsapp still best for me, as it communicates to most smartphones.

That doesn't sound 100%. Google Talk notifies you that the message will be delivered once the other person is online while Skype tells you it'll be delivered once *both* of you are online.
Google Talk will deliver once the other person is online, but only if you're still online when that happens.

You thinking of Skype that will only deliver when both of you are online.

I have received plenty of gtalk messages in my gmail when the sender was offline.

Skype too, but I'm definitely thinking of Google Talk. It may depend on which client the sender and/or receiver is using though, it is not as reliable as SMS.

You can not be serious? Calling SMS's reliable?

I lost a contract because of your reliable SMS's that went missing, Also peak periods tend to play havok on the system and don't even mention some that got delivered like 5 days even with the phone on and receiving calls during that time, as for Whatsapp, it has happened a couple of times last year when their servers went all wonky that some messages went bye bye.

On the same note I say that I have not missed a single Gtalk message to date. So I don't know what your definition of reliable is, but it sure does not look like its the same as mine.

Yes...I agree :p

Shall I go find your thread on the Whatsapp messages that you lost? I remember clearly how you bitched about it last year.

At least they got delivered. If you enable SMS delivery notifications, you can see whether an important message has been delivered, and if not, make a phone call.

Yeah I remember that, Cell-C had some weird issue on their network which caused Google Talk messages to go missing as well.

I think you missed the some went missing part, and only focused on the 5+ day old deliveries.

Using Gtalk on Android devices or inside Gmail, and they do give me delivery reports.

Gtalks/Whatsapp messages did not go missing during the Cell C issue, they just did not get pushed so you had to "wake" the phone to get them. I was referring to the issue that Whatsapp had with their servers.

Edit: As for the you know you can pick up a phone comment maybe you fail at reading as Talk state clearly that the user is Offline as seen in the screenshot below:

I think the only bad/good thing about Google Talk vs Whatsapp is that I can get messages from anyone regardless if they in my friends list or not in Whatsapp, but in Gtalk it needs to be on of the senders Gmail contacts. This is not a limitation of the Jabber protocol but a feature that Google implemented to block spam/advertisements. Also you can limit who sees if you are online or not, vs Whatsapp that will hand out that info to anyone that has access to your Cell number.

Yes I run both, but I use Gtalk for friends and Whatsapp for the rest of the world.

The messages were never delivered:
There's definitely something up, oc and I did some testing. He on Gtalk on Moto Defy, me on Gtalk on Nokia N900.
We chatted for a bit then I told oc to leave his phone alone for 15 minutes, I then sent him another message and he never received it, although he still showed up as being online and available.
I have used Google Talk through the web interface, Pidgin, Empathy and other clients and I find it is only reliable when both the sender and recipient are online at the same time.

I meant by enabling SMS delivery notification you can see if an important SMS message has been delivered, and if not, make a phone call, so there is no excuse for not knowing your message only got delivered 5 days later (or never).

Odd as I have Cell C on my main phone and did not loose a single GTalk message, and I used it extensively as its my main means of contact to some of the people I work with in NZ.

Anyway its kinda trivial to place a always on vs delivering system. Its like talking about Email vs Instant chat, they are clearly different systems marked for different uses. Ie: active chat vs passive chat.

Google Talk and whatsupp rule. The rest are a waste. What's the point if none of my friends use them.
