Mobile operators keep prices high

Smith added that in SA the mobile providers have far higher ARPU’s (average revenue per user) than international operators.
Strange how there isnt the same level of animosity directed at these guys who are as bad as, if not worse than, Telkom.

The mobile operators are preying off the poor more than anyone (if you take into account that being poor precludes you from being a telkom customer in the first place but that's a different issue).

Nothing new here, we the cash cow have known about this already.

I don't see what this person is going on about, why is this a problem for sentech? He wants someone else to do his job? Really this is just silly

With fewer and fewer clients each day, Mr Smith has way too much time on his hands (This is the third observation from him this week). Not that I disagree with him on this issue, but I fail to see how it affects Sentech.

Reading stuff like this I just want to throw up all over my desk!!! Just throw up everywhere!!! :) There is just no hope of ever having fair trade with any of our telecoms providers is there? And the amount of stupidity and greed that flies around with some of these representatives and "high ups" is frightening.

Evil as Telkom

Can't we do something about this? As they don't enjoy 'protected monopoly' status, surely they are more susceptible to negative publicity than Telkom? Negative publicity just seems to roll of Telkom's thick skin

It should be as easy(or difficult) to prove to their exorbitant charges as it is for us to do the same to Telkom  surely?

Winston Smith...a man I tried to talk to for over 2 years, but was never available to talk to a customer. lol. A man with no clue how to provide his own customers with the service they paid for wants to point fingers.....wahahahaha shut up and play with your toy trains winston.

Why is Sentech telling the mobile providers off? Last time I checked they actually had a network...

I actually got to talk to Winston at the conference today, told him as an ex-sentech user what I thought, I do believe he looked a little flushed with embarrassment.

Assuming that Telkom is keeping Sentechs data prices high because of their sat3 monopoly or whatever evil Telkom is responsible for, surely he should stick to campaigning against the evil that is Telkom? Then when he wins that war he can single handedly force mobile data pricing down by slashing the hell out of his own pricing. Thats at least one way he could do something about the evil cell companies. As for voice pricing I cant really see why he should use his position to speak out against that.

yeah, sounds like the kicks of a dying horse to me. nonetheless, the cellular cartel are really riping people off in south africa. for the last few months i have been in Ghana starting a new business and i can tell you, that Ghana is miles ahead when it comes to competition and fair pricing. I pay R1 to call anywhere in the world (IDD), i pay R1 for local in-network peak calls and 78 cents for local in-network off-peak calls. i also have free calls from midnight - 7:00 am

I think the difference between them and Telkom is that they do at least generally provide a good service, to an international standard, price excluded.

The poor don't really get a chance to complain and even if they did don't really know much about international comparisons etc.

The rest of us are so used to being ripped off we've come to accept it if it at least comes with ok service.

To be honest I've had far more problems with vodacom than I ever have with telkom wrt service levels but at least we can agree that the prices are ridiculous. :)

Simple they use "cute" cartoon like creatures and snappy advertising to make us feel all "warm & fuzzy" when spending money with them.

The networks will kill Skype as soon as it becomes pervasive and eats into their ARPU / voice revenue.

I am actually surprised they have not killed off MXIT as yet.

Maybe I've just been lucky with cellular service levels then. :) Think the illusion of choice also helps dissipate people's anger.
