Well today is the first time I brought my modem home and was keen to test the system out.
Now although I live only 1 km from a tower, I'm in a bit of a hole so the best signal I could get was 2 orange lights and 3 greenbars on the software.
After much fiddling around, even tried sticking the modem to the ceiling but no improvement.
When logging on (after about 7 tries) I was not very happy as I got disconnected several times.
So I thought bugger this, there has to be a better way, so I got out my ham radio brain, calculated what 2 wavelengths would be and looked for a metal object that I could use as a reflector.
After much searching I found "net die ding vir sonny" a Castle Lager metal tray and placed it 24 cm behind my Modem.... BINGO!
Now my modem stand next to my PC, with the tray stuck behind it on the wall with some prestik, all 4 the orange lights are on and all 5 green bars are lit.
I connect first time, and have been on now for 2 hours and not had one disconnection.
I'm in business [:D]

very very clever peter.

wish a knew a bit more
i take it this wont work with zero signal

Nice one! I have a TV tray and I held that up behind the modem and it definitelly boosted the signal, but it still gives the the old "remote computer did not respond"
I so wish someone would reboot that "remote computer" ;)

JhbGirl, what operating system does you computer have ?

I'm using XP...we've tried it on a Win98SE machine too...no luck.

When you say "remote computer did not respond" do you get a message that comes up afterwards say something like "Network not found - try again later" ?
If you do just keep trying as that is what I had before I got my crunching signal with my tray and sometimes I just clicked connect maybe 10 times before it connected.
Also have you managed to register yet ?

I haven't managed to register yet because it hasn't successfully connected so far.

I don't get the "Network not found" error. Here is what I get :

Connecting device...
Remote computer did not respond.
Session disconnecting.
Reason: Disconnected by modem

Unable to establish a connection for registration.

Had the 'remote computer didnt respond' thing a few times, and I tend to simply use the maxim of 'when in doubt, blame the towers' - noticed there seems to be work going on bigtime on assorted towers over the last few days, based on either connection drops, or simply no connection happening..

when in doubt, I always find phoning up the ever suffering tech support call centre, staying friendly, but whining like a girly boy, gets them to a) see that there's a problem, b) bump it up to second level tech guys (usually with a job ticket ref number, and c) gets someone calling me later checking that the signal is back up..

Often the guys in the call centre arent kept in the loop (so it seems) about tech work being done on the towers themselves.. hopefully the increasing barrage of customer feedback will make them see that its vital to have the data on what towers are being worked on/fixed available in the call centres, so that they'll know when the customer calls come in, as to why there's a problem, and be able to pre-empt the roundabout process currently - where they dont know exactly which towers are being worked on, down on phone-answering level..

Its afterwards when the fine tuning starts which takes time, a lot of patience and head scratching and to inform support of where we are and what we doing is virtually impossible.

Whilst trying to improve our signal...thought this might give you a giggle :P

We've had just about had every kitchen utencil up there :P

yoyo

got my friends modem and tried to connect, i got 3 lights on the modem and 14% signal strengh. it couldnt connect cause of the remote computer excuse [:p]. It tried to connect to base station #82 but when we phoned sentech and asked why its not connecting they said there is no such base station [:(]. /me wonders if there ever will be [xx(].

Dr4k out

Haha. Does that pot actually work? :)

Perhaps covering a large piece if cardboard with tinfoil could be used, if you don't have a flat solid metal object available. That seems to work for focussing the sun's rays (see http://solarcooking.org/plans.htm)

Ciao.

Joh:3:17 - For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world; but to save the world through Him.
Ro:10:9 - If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord", and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

nah :(

I was trying to give a "tongue in cheek" look at the lengths we've gone to to try and make this work ;)

We are getting someone(not from Sentech) out on Monday to test for a signal with the possibility of putting up a dish on the roof. That's our last resort. We only live 3.9km away from the tower, so we should get a signal with line of site.

I luv your attempts - now thats persiverance for you [:D]

Btw here's a quick way to connect.

Go into your Network Connections and there you will see a Dialup connection setup for Sentech with a Phone Number of *99#
Go into its properties and enable everything and set the Modem Speed to 921600, also enable the "Show icon in notification area when connected"
When done, drag a shorcut onto your desktop and double click it.
This way I connect almost instantly everytime.

I've tried that, but I don't have my own username or password yet because we haven't been able to register yet. Just a quick question. Does anyone know what the password for the new_user is? I've tried setting up a manual connection under control panel -> network connections, but as our proper account isn't activated, I need to log in as a new_user...I think..argh...I'm so frustrated ;) It gets to opening port...then I get a error 678. Is the proper phone number for the dial-up *99# ?

Yes thats the correct number but as for a standard like password I dont know of one.

When trying to get registered, the username and password is new_user (on both). It will only allow you to access the registration pages though.

Hmm I have exactly the same thing at home. Connecting with 10% to Base station 82. But the remote computer does not respond.

Where do you live? I wonder if we are somehow connecting to a Non Sentech signal? That would be a bit of a bummer as I don't think we can control what station it attemptd to connect to.

Anyone got any ideas?
