Anyone know of a 22 inch monitor which would give a comparable picture.

Ive been thinking of getting a samsung 2232gw, but while looking at them in various stores, i can never understand why the image quality always seems so poor.

Is it just a bad habbit of the various stores not running the screens with native resolutions or something. Or are they just poorly calibrated? is it just tn versus s-ips ?

When u look at an imac 24 inch in the same store, the picture is beautiful.

I though its about time that i jump of the 22 inch bandwagon, and dont mind spending a bit more a quality panel?

Any thoughts?

Tomorrow me and a friend will probably go running around to see how good 22' LCDs look. Samsung 2232GW and some LG one are on the list. Oh yes, I saw your reply at SS forum.

The iMac 24 may have a LED backlit display although maybe they restrict their MBP's to that only. Go for a HP 24 inch or a 24 inch Dell, they are superior to Apple Cinema Display
offerings at the moment. I'm running a 30 inch Dell with my Mac Pro and it's beautiful.

A friend of mine has the 2232GW. I actually love that screen. Watched movies/series on it, games, you name it. No complaints about screen quality/definition.

If you have a problem with it, have a look at the 2243BWX. It costs more, but has a contrast ratio of 8000:1. If you still have problems with it, have your eyes checked out. Because this is a pretty good screen.

Went to check out Samsung 2232GW today. Went to Woodmead IC and they have a power problem and the sales staff is not helping at all. So we headed off to Sandton IC which woodmead IC sales said they only have a demo and no stock.

Anyway we asked the friendly sales there to take the monitor down from stand and we play around the settings, looked at the display quality and I have to admit the contrast is very bright and display is impressive. But when I changed the backgroud to black, I can actually see there's some white colour distortion (not exactly sure how to describe it but it's very similar to very slight ghost images) on the screen. To further test the monitor we ran a "Catwoman" DVD which was found in the DVD Drive. The colours showed brilliantly. Running it at full-screen proved quite a problem as the image was horribly distorted due to wide screen resolution. I'm expecting the picture quality to be much better if we had used a better quality source and DVI cable/Graphic card.

The screen looks a little plastic but it goes very well with my Raidmax Sagitta chassis. Didn't see any LG monitors as advertised by online traders and FrontoSA in IC, only other ones are HP 19'-22', Acer 19'-22' and Lenovo 19'.

Guess the choices are not that much and we will probably going to get the 2232GW.

Samsung makes some of the best screens on the market, so you cannot go wrong with them. HP makes an almost better screen, but they are horribly expensive. LG screens are probably my favourite and are comparable to the Samsung ones.

The plastic look is just the style it was created in, but I don't find it too bad.

Is that not widely accepted as being a particularly meaningless number?

Allow me to suggest the BenQ FP241W.

I love my monitor and suggest it to anyone who is looking for a 24". The price is a bit high, but for what you get, it's pretty darn amazing. Beats almost every 22" around.

As for the dvd, the reason it looked so junk is because it isn't being upscaled, and so is being stretched, which horribly distorts it. DVD resolution is much much lower than what a 22" or 24" offers.

I know 24' is good but not in the budget and it won't fit into my computer stand. Unfortunately the choices we have in SA are limited.

Thanks for all the info, it seems thats the 2232gw will end up being the way to go. That being said, it would be nice to get a look at one of those 8000 contrast ratio lg's though.

Will have to keep looking.

My intent with all of this is to build a decent hackintosh. I know the real thing may be better, but i think we can all agree that you dont get much for 20 000 with the imac. The weak rand as well as core's business practices just doesnt make the real thing that much better to a well designed hackintosh, if you take price difference into consideration.

For the saving of a couple grand (read 5 to 10 depending on what compromises are made), im perfectly willing to jump through some hoops occasionaly.

A hackintosh's is becoming more and more of a viable alternative it seems. Especially when parts are chosen carefully.

Another option

LG W2252TQ 10 000 to 1 contrast ratio 2ms response time

http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=1878&v=1

Only place i can find who has one is sybraritic, im sure it could be found cheaper with further looking.

You've got your eye on a very very good screen there. 2ms is the best you get and 10000:1 is a decent (more like brilliant) contrast ratio. The price isn't bad either. The same screen with 5ms and 8000:1 ratio costs around R2800...
