Monitor Traffic over network

Can you guys please advice me on a way to monitor traffic or data usage of kids pc or devices over the network from my main pc.
there must be software to use this. problem with my modem is it tracks all data moved over the network
I want to monitor the internet downloads and websites used.

The only thing you can do is to put a proxy of sorts between the devices and the internet connection.
Smoothwall, pfsense etc are all free and should be able to cover what you need.

You need a device with a proper firewall, you can either get a decent router to do it or a dedicated PC on your network.

Might even be possible to email them their weekly usage report, top x websites,etc.

Old friend of mine did this. His kids could surf as they liked, but knew nothing was secret.

Using a DNS service like openDNS might prevent them from accessing dangerous content.
Adding ublock to their browsers will also present them from accessing unwanted sites.
