whats the best program to monitor my usage, or can i just check on the local area connection, are "packets" the MB used?

You can also use PRTG Traffic Grapher to monitor the traffic going through the router. To do this, you have to enable SNMP on the router. Traffic Grapher also allow you to monitor your own PC with the use of a packet sniffer (like DUMeter,NetLimiter,etc does it).

Oh, and I've written an application like RouteSentry, just with bit more advanced features - like showing statistics and allowing routes for additional network interfaces like with gatecrasher's script. My application is still in beta stage, so don't expect everything to be perfect. I haven't put in time to write user documentation yet.
