Good day,

I am fulfilling the IT role at my company and we have agents who use laptops and are registered on our WiFi. However, over the past few weeks the usage has become insane. Is there an easy to install and use program that I can install on my PC that can monitor internet usage on the WiFi that the agents are using? I need to see if people are downloading unauthorised content, like movies / music / games.

I was told about wireshark, but it just seems to complicated to use and decipher?

Many thanks,

Maybe Windows Update trying to download Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Update 1?

Wireshark isnt going to tell you much, its a protocol analyzer and unless you really know what you are doing it will be confusing as heck.
You need to install a proxy that sits between your internet connection and the rest of your network.
You can run one in a virtual machine or use any old pc lying around.
I would recommend something simple to setup like smoothwall, its simple and will give you the reporting you are looking for.
personally I run a custom squid setup an ntopng for layer 3 inspection, nothing gets past that I dont know about.

I personally fell in love with Kerio but if you want free Smoothwall is not half bad.

IP accounting on a Mikrotik also works very well.

Kerio lets me block all unauthorised vpn as well as all usenet and torrents (and anything else I want to for that matter).

Amazing how much faster the internet feels just by doing the above.

We use a Mikrotik RB - this sends traffic flows to our netflow analyser. There are some free software for this. Great for IP based accounting. However all machines should be on a static IP lease.
