More African languages on SABC

I bet the advertisers are'nt going to be very happy, there goes a lot of revenue out of the SABC's coffers.

Blah what can you do, I'd rather go online anyway than watch propaganda.
 
Somebody mentioned channels dedicated to languages. That is a brilliant idea but the problem is that ad spend will inevitably levitate toward the white viewer channels because that is still where the spending power resides. No point advertising products to a market that doesn't buy. This is changing fast seeing as non-whites started earning more than the white market about 2 years ago... Doesnt filter through to TV though for some reason.

Tricky business...

If they provide English or Afrikaans only channels, the other languages will be starved of ad revenue. That is why the SABC is so skidish of this idea of language specific channels...

Are u seriously saying that 9 languages should be squashed into 1 channel and Afrikaans and english have each their own channels. Aren't we going back 20 years here?
 
The TV spectrum in SA is under utilized Stepper...

They can easily make 6 other channels available... It will however not make financial sense as some of these stations will simply not make money!
 
Well I think it should be equal share till the situation u (Ant) describe is reached. Cos some languages don't even get 30 minutes a week.
 
I was wondering what the qualification would be to become an official language.
Do you need more than a certain number of people for example?
I bet that Hebrew could qualify as a official language.
Surely there are more than 250 000 Jewish people in SA?
I would like to see Hebrew on TV, it's one of the oldest languages in the world.

Thanks Neio as i am a jew boy - he he !! I dont blv there are that many jews here but the progs. i imagine would be quite good. Just my opinion.

If u ever go to Jerusalem you would love it then if u love history. Its amazing place for all religions

All I can say, after careful consideration, is that very few white people in this country are qualified to understand the true import of what this country went through, myself very much included.

I need to constantly remind myself that :-

a. We went through a peaceful transition
b. I've still alive and still have a better standard of living than 95% of my fellow south africans
c. I've been "discriminated against" in the most gentle way - a few problems due to BEE
d. I have never lived in abject poverty under a dehumanising regime
e. While apartheid was raging on, I was snug at home, getting a good eduction, 3 meals a day, with a roof over my head in a 3/4 acre garden with a swimming pool.

So yeah, I try to temper my feelings on the race/culture/language issue where I can, but sometimes I forget and get all self righteous and indignant about how my rights are being trampled on, how my "culture" is being short changed and my one man company is loosing lucrative contacts due to BEE. ;)
 
BB_MATT agreed - my people (sorry to bring this up guys) went through much worse in europe mate but i suppose u r right !!!

Sorry just wanna make a point.

You get 2 types of people
1. A white skin in Africa.
2. Africa in a white skin.

Me I see myself as the latter. We have a great country and I for one will not let race or racism be tolerated! Not Calling anyone a racist though.

It's good that SABC is putting more black languages on TV.

About SABC1 and 2 not having anything 'watchable' - the stations are designed to provide a certain type of service:

SABC1: Can't remember the mandate
SABC2: Public service/Family programming
SABC3: Entertainment

Hence why SABC 3 would be the most 'watchable'.

Thabo Mbeki's "I am an African" speech includes the following phrase:

I am an African ... I am formed of the migrants who left Europe to find new new home on our native land. Whatever their actions, they remain still part of me".
 
craigsa, yes Mbeki is sometimes a little alienating to whites on account of what is perceived as 'racism' by some - the point is that Mbeki is articulating thats whites too are African, and its a good argument to throw in the face of any person who claims that because you are white you are therefore 'not African'.

Then you dont even need to bother with SABC or DSTV...

- Will and Grace
- The Practice (James Spader can do me anytime)
- The Amazing Race
- Special Assignment
- The Kumars at Number 42
- Back to the Floor

And my absolute favourite and the person I'd most like to meet in all the world (along with Mandela, of course):

- OPRAH!!

Yeah he can do me too (j/k ;) ) One of the best character roles I've seen in a very long time, he plays it so well it's almost surreal.

James Spader's character in The Practice is very Ally McBealish - you can see that David E Kelly had returned to write many of these episodes, and you can see he was missing the humourous stuff he used to write for Ally characters (Richard Fish, Ling, and Larry).

Oprah is awesome! I swear, I'd donate a kidney or something to meet her. Why don't you like Oprah????
 
One thing i will say about oprah : at least she is very charitable !! good for her
