Vandalism my rear end, this is just poor management

Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa on Tuesday dispatched a team to investigate sewage flowing into the Hartbeespoort Dam, after being contacted by a Lead SA representative.

Residents in the area said the stench from the dam was overwhelming but Molewa said since she took over as Water minister in November, sewage pumps near the dam have broken down twice.

Scientist Jan van der Waal and the minister both said vandalism of electrical supply boxes could be causing the problems at the water treatment plants.

“Some of the electrical controls have been either removed or damaged,” said van der Waal.

Oh, please. I have no love for the ANC but I can believe that vandalism is to blame for this. I have seen vandalism of street lamps with my own eyes. The municipality came and repaired them and not long after, they where vandalized again.

Not everything is miss-management.

For Marine, everything is. Government is always at fault no matter what.

I think he means that if that local ANC run department would quit siphoning off all the funds they might have the wherewithal to repair the equipment and make it secure from vandalism. The fact that they have not done this means that they are either 1) too lazy or 2) have misappropriated all the funds.

Yes, either way... it is most likely ANC rot... but not really fair to say until we have all the details. I would not be at all surprised though.

why the hate? its his opinion that its not managed properly, which is just if you think about the security they put around those pumps and what not. If somebody has gotten through the security, then it needs to be hightened via management (which is probably not happening). The fact that its been left for the time it has means its bad management. Blaming it on vandalism is a cop out and something they CAN do something about. In the end its bad management or no management what so ever that it takes a private representative to inform them about this problem.

And anyway - its important to have these sorts of posts so that perspective can be made and arguments brought forward.

Question: Why is vandalism not linked to management? and not the type of vandalism like spray painting a wall in the corner alley at 1am. The vandalism which ends up with raw sewage in a very important dam because of problems with the pumps which should be locked up in a bricked building and not accessible to anybody wanting to vandalise it.

My money is on the ANC not giving a hoot about the dam for such a time that its not effecting the people living around it.

I have worked on some of the effected sites in the past and they were always breaking down. The site access was relatively remote as well and sometimes a leak will only be detected days if not weeks later. Vandalism has always been a problem. Question is how much money are they willing to spend on a proper monitoring system with added security.

how ever much it takes to make sure that the dam and general fresh water supply areas are protected from this type of issue. Left unattended for long enough and we will lose all fresh water areas in the country through lack of funding. The money must stop going into their pockets and be put to some proper use.

Unless adequate legislation coupled with hefty fines which is enforced and passed to protect the rivers and estuaries i am afraid we are on a slippery slope to a water crisis.

I think Chris Rea summed it up well in his song Road to hell part 2......

Well I'm standing by a river
But the water doesn't flow
It boils with every poison you can think of
And I'm underneath the streetlight
But the light of joy I know
Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows
And the perverted fear of violence
Chokes the smile on every face
And common sense is ringing out the bell
This ain't no technological breakdown
Oh no, this is the road to hell

And all the roads jam up with credit
And there's nothing you can do
It's all just bits of paper flying away from you
Oh look out world, take a good look
What comes down here
You must learn this lesson fast and learn it well
This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway
Oh no, this is the road
Said this is the road
This is the road to hell

Lol getting insults from Genetic and his crew? :D:D
Water off a ducks back but thanks for trying to explain it to them Gary.

Tell me you ANC supporters like R13 and Genetic, how long has this been going on? How long has Hartees had problems?
The water purifications plants are breaking down due to lack of upkeep.
But yeah play the man, if that makes you feel better about voting for a dysfunctional government.

South Africa has seen a huge breakdown, in recent years, of our sewage treatment infrastructure, as was highlighted in a recent Carte Blanche expose, that showed how between 12 and 16 sewage works empty their effluent into the water that flows into the Hartebeespoort dam.

Yeah let me guess who's fault is this?
Waiting for the usual ANC propaganda crowd to respond, Genetic, R13, theratman?

Brilliant, what have they done about this?
"Heading for sewage crisis

Bernard Fourie, legal representative of the Save Our Vaal Environment (Save) action group which has been involved in court action against the Emfuleni local government for the past two years, said the country was heading for a sewage crisis.

He blamed the local authories for this.

"They got rid of the knowledgeable people and cannot handle the crisis. Developments 'explode' without the sewerage systems being upgraded."

Bouwer believed that was exactly what was happening in Hartbeespoort.

"There are so many big developments that the sewerage plant simply cannot handle the pressure."

Lack of maintenance blamed for Hartbeespoort sewage fiasco

Guys in his defence: http://www.ewn.co.za/articleprog.aspx?id=56354

Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa on Wednesday urged the Madibeng Municipality to implement a maintenance plan after two sewage pumps broke, leading to raw sewage pouring into the Hartbeespoort Dam.

A senior team consisting of the minister and the municipal mayor visited the stations on Wednesday afternoon.

At one station cable theft interrupted power supplies to the pumps.

At another station, two broken pumps were evident. The state of disrepair was attributed to a lack of maintenance of the stations due to staff shortages.

Mayor Sophie Molokoane-Machika said there was insufficient technical staff to repair the pumps.

“We know that we have staff shortages, we want to acknowledge that,” she said. “But as a municipality, we have worked on it. We have advertised it [and are] currently in the process of interviewing.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Alliance ward councillor Graeme Peplar said the municipality was indeed short-staffed.

“It’s lack of maintenance,” he said. "They’re under capacity at Madibeng council, the people in the department, they haven’t got the tools, they haven’t got the hands to do the work and then this is what happens.”

Water affairs officials started to fix the pumps after media reports highlighted the spill.

Meanwhile, Molewa said they have to find a way to stop vandals. She said cables and a transformer were stolen "twice in two weeks." She added, "That is a big problem, we need to get to the bottom of this.”

“In six months time from now, I want everything that’s infrastructure related here in the sewer… fixed,” she said.

When the ANC is involved, it is normally safe to blame them.

Yes, we all know that! You are stating the obvious.
