(More) Bad signs for Blu-ray

There are no real cons for the BD, except the fact that it might not be as "future proof" as everyone thought it would be.
 
Blu Ray is such a waste atm for gaming. 75% of the disc is empty. They might as well make compilations (3 in 1) of older PS3 games for the budget sector.
 
From a S.A point of view we need physical disk storage to stick around for a long time, no matter if its blu-ray or DVD.

Lets say that the average HD movie download is around 8-10 gigs and lets also say the price of data comes down to R40 for 1 gig.

That means you will spend 40 by 8 = R320 , and the movie wont be for free either, so you will have to pay for it, lets say R50.

Its still gonna be cheaper to by the blu-ray disk.

Blu-ray movie = R199 - R299
HD DVD movie = N/A:D

Is that the Blu-ray disks fault, or the developers fault.
 
God... you people seriously are in need of help. Consumers will start snapping up BluRays pretty quickly if that sub $200 price is correct. Quite apart from that, a physical format will always be needed - I for one will not put absolutely everything I have on an internet storage device ever. I mean, some stuff you will want with you.

The format itself will have to be future-proof because businesses will not change their format for writing to archives every 3 years, no matter what anyone else wants.
 
I agree that a physical media is needed.
Solid state is becoming cheaper and cheaper and pocket flash drives are getting bigger and bigger (in gig size ;) ).
 
Although i joked i also reckon its the way to go.
And it makes pirating a game damn hard!
Imagine buying a blank 20 or 50 gig flash device and getting a game uploaded on a server at a game store.
You would pay for the game and the physical device would be owned by you.
Although you could just use a hard drive.....

In short?

BD = DVD with more pixels.

<nutshell>
The question is cost to consumer and there are basically 2 camps
1. Feel the benefit is worth the additional outlay of R4000 for a player + R6000 for a suitable screen.

2. Those who feel there is insufficient benefit to warrant the premium over DVD considering the lack of "must have feature" and the availability of HD content from other sources, be it DSTV or download.

@D_A, No it's not a joke it's a really serious possibility. Imagine walking into a store with a 32Gb+ flash drive (memory unit etc etc) Instead of having rows of games cases you have a dispenser like they have at digital photo labs - you sign in with your gamertag, chose your game, swipe your credit card and get your game. To play off the stick you have to sign in to live, or alternatively you can do a permanent transfer to an HDD on a Signed console. Bloody marvellous idea!

I believe that Blu-ray is here to stay for a while: In 4 years time we'll all have Blu-ray burners in our PCs. The only thing I hate about BR in the PS3 is the slow data transfer rates.

Offchance that with slower than expected uptake, we will completely skip single/dual layer and head onto triple layer?

A year ago Blu Ray 50GB storage sounded really awesome. Now with flash drives becoming cheaper and with increased storage capacities, it doesn't seem that much inviting.

Exactly - who wants a 50gig movie in any case??
BD is great for data storage for a PC, but it is useless for anything else.
Untill the BD drive becomes main stream for Pc users, it wont work.
