More free ADSL data from FNB

So nice - thanks FNB. Can we get little bit of mobile data free also ? :)

Now Afrihost don't make us wait too long....lets see what you got.

Nice move, now a change or at least some reduction in data bundles would go so much further

First National Bank (FNB) announced that its Internet Service Provider, FNB Connect, will be increasing the free monthly ADSL data from today (Tuesday, 8 May 2012).

Wow, did I wake up in a time warp? Today's the 8th of May?

5 Gig doesn't seem to be a big deal if you've got uncapped ADSL. but when you think about it, there are customers paying, well, a relatively fortune on Telkom to get the same Data!

Way to to FNB! My Bank forever!

I like the free data, I dial up FNB and route all their net blocks over it, plus it runs on a different undersea cable to my regular connection so failure or congestion can just be bypassed.

I must admit I am not exactly sure what you said. But it sounds cool, especially if you say it with a beat. +1.

so true. they seem to be doing everything right nowadays. how hard is it switching banks?

I also wanna know.
Been wanting to change for a while, but what about my stop orders, loans, beneficiaries etc. etc. Don't suppose there's any FNB employees on the Forum?

Well, I am not an FNB employee, but from experience I can tell you it is a relative breeze. The biggest pain was to actually close my accounts at my old bank. Just tell them upfront you don't care to speak to the retention department and that you will walk out in 15 minutes leaving all your cards there so they better just shut up and close your accounts.

* Beneficiaries - I know ABSA had the option to export beneficiaries, but I had to manually re-enter them from the spreadsheet. Which was actually good, as I got to clean the list.

* Stop orders - No need to worry about them :-)

* Loans - probably your biggest stumbling block. Speak to somebody @ FNB. Maybe you can consolidate it. Vehicle finance I will leave with whoever you are currently with.

* Debit orders - FNB will help you switch, but I found it more convenient to do myself. It took a couple of phone calls, but I could confirm the exact dates of the switch.

You will have to run accounts in parallel for a month or so till you are sure everything is switched.

I would suggest putting 3 to 4 hours (not consecutive) aside for the exercise. Also plan it beforehand - look at your bank statements to make sure you identified all the debit orders. Some insurance companies have multiple debit orders, so make sure you get them to switch all of them. Whatever you do, tell your old bank that you don't want to speak to any retention agent. They will waste en epic amount of your time with nonsense.

Why didn't I think of that lol. I'll want to move my bond as well so maybe it's not just about switching banks and cheque accounts

Oh, so you answered your own question :-) Bonds are a problem. Almost never makes sense to move bond :-(

I do the same ^
What you mean by "route all their net blocks" though ?
FNB Gold Client here - happy :)

This is the biggest pain. You only want to do this is you can get a substantially lower interest rate at the new bank (which could be possible), then have the cash around (it will cost me about R22,000 to move my bond) to move it. As illustration, on my loan, if my interest rate could be dropped 1% it will save me R180,000 in interest payments to move my bond, and for that I will try and scoop up R22,000 somewhere.

But at the same time, there's no reason why your bond can't be at the old bank (unless you got substantial benefits from having it with your cheque account etc.) while your cheque account etc. is at the new one.

So after some google work I think I know that FNB runs on IS and SAIX (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/archive/index.php/t-171144.html).

Does this mean I should get the same pings to European servers as I do with Afrihost (on Telkom it was 400-450 and on Afrihost it is 200-250)? I'm still kind of new to the non-3G internet scene and most of the ping results I get for FNB are from back in 2009.

I'll make my bond my condition to switch to FNB then. If they can give me better interest rates then I'm gone
