Did anyone just watch the story on Carte Blanche?? That was just shocking. :(

There is something seriously wrong here IMO. There could well be more "isolated" outbreaks in the near future. They don't know or won't say what's killing the pets.
 
This is beyond shocking, IMO the only thing that will stop this is if everybody starts suing, make them pay financially and then they'll get the message.
 
:mad: Yes, also watched - wth is next?! Freshy, never had time to study the links you suggested - I am seriously going to make a switch! Is there anyone out there that knows exactly what are the brands that can be trusted for now? This just scares the hell out of me:eek: My heart goes out to everyone stuggling with sick pets, or even worse, had to say goodbuy.

And the bloody cheeck these people have with the "ingredients"!!!!
 
MLK, TJ is loving Husky Home-style range, which is tinned. According to the label, it is a balanced diet. AFAIK, dry dog food not affected include olympic, and Hills ... to back through the thread and check it out. Pedigree hasn't been affected, to my knowledge either.
 
stopped all bought food after the Woolworth scare, am feeding my dogs (2 yorkies, 1 silky terrier)a mixture of rice, lean mince or lean chicken with a bit of olive oil in it and veggies, they are triving on it, once a week they have an egg for breakfast and they get Vidaylin drops and flax oil everyday as a supplement and fresh bones to chew on (boiled), I do not trust anything anymore that is made for dogs. My 2 alsatians I put on Bobtail (locally made) but am watching what is happening internationally also,I remembered last year Pedigree had to recall their tins worldwide because of contamination. Anbody tried Vita-pet http://www.vita-pet.co.za/index.html it is supose to bollow the BARF diet? mine wont' touch, they sniff and walk away and just refuse to eat, but then they are rotten spoiled
 
yes 2 well sort of, they are not mine but were left as orphans after a bad car crash (my sister) that killed most of the family they spend most of their holidays in France with my parents, I probably will have to pack up soon & go back- so in the evening after work, cook for kids, cook for pets, then chow on a sandwich for myself with litres of coffee LOL but we lost 1 4 year old yorkie 2 years ago due to kidney failure, it was horrible , so I am now totally neurotic about what we all eat or drink (coffee exclude-a long sleep for me is 6 hrs a night)
 
You going back to France, if I read correctly, so whats going to happen to your pets once you've left? 14 years for a dog is very old. Is it not? lots of coffee can cause kidney failure. lol (note to self: it's not a joke.)
 
sort off 2, not mine, my sister had a terrible car crash that wiped off most of the familly and my parents are in France, so will have to go back there soon, too much of a circus flying over with 2 kids and 3 dogs all out of control because they are too spoiled but I love them all to bits, at least there is no quanrantine there (I bet my mother wished ther was for dogs & kids LOL). Evening are made off cook for kids, cook for dogs, than have a sandwich and lt of coffee. Lost a 4 year old yorkie form kidney failure, 2 years later I still cry at the tought of it and the suffering of the poor little animal, so am totaly neurotic about what we all eat and drink
 
Sorry to hear about your sister, my deepest sympathy to u and the rest of your family.May your sister RIP.

Wouldn't this be exactly the sort of thing your dog would be eating if it were in the wild?

If you want to delay kidney failure, particularly in cats, you have to shift their diet away from protein as they get older. You also have to take steps to stave off arthritis, epsecially in dogs.

Pure breed animals tend to have problems because they are so inbred. The demand for maintaining the purity of the breed leads to genetic defects and often animals less resistant to diseases.

If this one is biased towards commercial food, then the other is biased toward raw food diets. The latter is also driven by commerce though - the promoters have a financial interest. Is there any independent research showing that one type of feeding is better than the other?

Ok, I do believe that the pet food industry, on the whole, do have the health of our pets in mind. And yes, animals do eat carcasses in the wild.

But ... those carcasses (in the wild) were not given various medications, prior to their death or even given penobarbitol to put them to sleep, which was the issue raised in Carte Blanche.

I understand that Carte Blanche is trying to be sensational. But fact still remains, pets have died. Even though the PFI are doing a good job on the whole, maybe they just need to take a second look at some procedures and refine them, to make sure tragedies like this do not occur again in future.
 
sorry, none of my dogs are 14, the one I lost was 4 years old, the other are 1year, 1year&7 months, 2 at 2 years and the big ones are both 3 years, all coming with, my parents have a large garden and a larger heart
 
I actually don't know what made me change channels at that moment. But I turned to Carte Blanche just as they aired the pet food story. That was the only story I watched. Reading the transcript doesn't seem the same as watching the story. But even so, I can't get it out of my head. I don't think I've ever kept up, so closely, with any news story like I have this pet food scare.

I heard, though, that there was another, even more shocking story about the treatment of disabled kids at some centre... but that's a story for another thread.

Thanks Aphrael, I think Pedigree is also manufactured by NOLA? I received a letter from NOLA after I e-mailed them last night to TRY and DOUBLE check the ULTRA DOG (NOLA) suggested after I returned my Vets Choice to my Vet. (I am stuck with 50kg's!!). Tried pasting it here but does not want to allow me to copy. They have insured me that all NOLA pet food products are 100% safe and that they have extra precautionary measures in place when doing there tests.

For me personally its not about sensation but more a dissapointment in investing in a product, which I have to budget for carefully, but felt confident is the best for my dogs - and I must tell you, I have friends who joked about the "expensive" food I insisted on, swearing that any other less expensive brand does the same for their dogs. I had a couple of comments around - ja ... what do you say now.

In any event, for some of us our pets are truly like family members, its just not on to live in fear that each time you feed your dog/cat you fear you might be poisening them!:eek: And you are paying a helluva price for that poison as well. There's no excuse - they have to be 110% sure of the product they put out there, end of story!
