More Pet Food Problems

If you feed your dogs Vet's Choice, STOP!

Vets Choice, manufactured by Royal Canin, is a premium dog food product sold only at veterinarian's offices and pet shops.

According to Dr Steenkamp, Royal Canin decided to recall all Vets Choice products after there were signs of contamination in the food.

Recently, there were confirmed cases of 19 dogs in Cape Town and Johannesburg who'd presented with acute renal failure, all of whom appeared to have been fed Vets choice products. According to a statement sent out to veterinary surgeons across the country and in the possession of News24, it wasn't clear what had caused the condition.

I bought 2 bags 2 weeks ago:mad: :( :eek:

They are bloody exspensive:mad:

When were the food contaminated can it be that the bags i bought will not be?
 
Vercogen ... When we changed Fayth over from a supermarket brand to Vets Choice, we did some calculations and it actually worked out cheaper, though the bag was bigger and cost more. Vets Choice was cheaper, per day, than the supermarket brand.

Fayth is now on Hill's J/D diet, for her arthritis and I'm due to get her a new bag of food on Saturday, but now I'm concerned because Hill's have also recalled some of their products :(

Yeah i did the calculation as well, but R250 is still alot of money to just put out for the garbage man, but darnit i love my dogs so i must do it:(
 
A Statement issued by the South African Veterinary Association and Royal Canin South Africa:

"At the time of writing there have been 19 confirmed cases (in the last few days in Jbg and Cape Town) of dogs presenting with acute renal failure. Although at this stage, the cause is not known, it appears that all the dogs were being fed Vets Choice pet food. In the interests of patients and pending tests being conducted on Vets Choice products, Royal Canin South Africa has decided to suspend all sales of Vets Choice with immediate effect and vets are requested to advise clients to cease feeding Vets Choice products to their pets until further notice.
This is a precautionery measure and a further announcement on this issue will be sent within 24 hours."

It is suspected that the wheat gluten in the food has possibly been contaminated with melamine, which can lead to renal failure.

Take it back, they have to refund you if they're recalling it AFAIK.
 
this really grates me, as my dog's are all getting Vet's Choice. One of my dogs already has kidney problems as it is :(

I agree! I also feed my dogs Vets Choice and it just pi$$es me off that while I think I am giving my dogs excellent nutrition something like this creeps in that could cause irreversible damage to my pets health! :mad:
 
The best thing we can all do is contact our vets and find out the exact story. I'm going to phone mine now and also ask about cat food, since 2 colleagues have cats, as well as one of our neighbours.
 
Ok, I spoke to my vet's receptionist now. She said that Hill's is only overseas (lucky for me :)) and as for Vet's Choice, the best you can do is keep the bag to one side for now, until they know exactly which types / brands have been affected. You can give your vet a call on Monday for more information.

No cat foods have been affected. :)

My cats eat Royal Canin. Well not anymore :mad:

I hope those who's animals got sick or died sue. For sure if one of my pets die from something like this **** is gonna hit the fan :mad: :mad:

My dog eats PURINA.

It seems like this kind of thing is gonna become the norm :sick:
 
I've read somewhere that some pet owners feed their animals on a raw or BARF diet overseas. After reading that article this morning, the thought crossed my mind again about researching it again, but discarded it, after remembering that the animals are mostly fed chicken and thought about the possibilities of bird flu, salmonella infections, etc. Anyhow, I'm going to try and get more information from my vet when I see him on Saturday.
 
What nutritionally sound alternatives are there to Vet's Choice? (my dogs refuse to eat Hills and they don't like pedigree or any of the "cheaper" brands)
 
Royal Canin make Vet's Choice too :( Not willing to take that risk....
