Johannesburg - A new survey says more than one in three South African men admit to having committed rape.

A study led by the government-funded Medical Research Foundation says that in Gauteng province, home to South Africa's most populous city of Johannesburg, more than 37% of men said they had raped a woman. Nearly 7% of the 487 men surveyed said they had participated in a gang rape.

More than 51% of the 511 women interviewed said they'd experienced violence from men, and 78% of men said they'd committed violence against women.

A quarter of the women interviewed said they'd been raped, but the study says only one in 25 rapes are reported to police.

The group hopes to replicate the study across southern Africa.

:wtf:

What a stupid test. How can you do a study of just 487 people and justify it? Other variables must be considered! 487 people do not represent the millions living in Gauteng! Think about it, maybe if they did a study of at least 487,000 people in that area it would make sense. This does not.

I am telling you, this is a study done and funded by the Europe/America/Austrilia's so that people do not come to Africa, especially SA because it's economy in general is steady and growing. They don't want people from the US/Euro to migrate here so they are throwing these f'd up studies.

Exactly. 487 men can hardly give an accurate assessment. Pretty stupid.

...mmm... Medical research foundation...

I call bullshyt on this, no way in hell 1/3 men rape woman, not even with that few people surveyed.

Brilliant sample on which to reach such an earth-shattering assumption... 487 out of a possible 25 000 000 (assuming a 50/50 male/female split) = 0.002%

It is a pity that some are concentrating on the (incorrect) stats instead of the problem of rape. Sad world.

Rape is a problem we agree, but so are the bra burning feminists who classify everything as rape.

Rape is only a problem if you are part of the problem.

I have never and will never rape a woman. Based on that I call Bullshyt. I'm just a normal Joe, and I'm willing to say 90% of the men out there are normal Joes. To push such stats to try and prove a point is counter productive. Woman are being raped daily, I fully agree that it needs to be adressed, but what does a heading like this do to the greater population?

Seriously, I think you're looking at this the wrong way.

Make no mistake about it, Rape is an extremely serious issue in (especially) South Africa.

But to imply that 1 in 3 South African males are rapists is wrong.

The actual rape statistics are horrific and what makes it even worse is that not all rapes are reported.

I'll repeat what I've written elsewhere on this forum "Rapists should be executed".

This has the same twang to it as that idiotic Charlize Theron ad from a couple of years ago. I've got 4 or 5 close male friends, none of whom would dare touch a woman uninvited, let alone resort to rape. That in itself invalidates the entire 'study'.

Sensationalism derived from non-representative stats FTL. Problems do not get addressed by overstating them to the point of being ludicrous.

Ah those 'enlightened' fem nazis again.....

What a load of b@lls%^t! There is no way this is accurate. If 1 in 3 were rapists then like 1 in 1000 women would not have been raped. While I appreciate we have a problem in this country stats like this do nothing to help all they do is create animosity in the men who don't and so are counter productive.

This kind of crap is nothing new. Remember celeb dimwits Charlize Theron and Zola appearing in adverts labelling all S.A men rapists. In Zola's case he called himself a rapist lol, idiot.
