OK, so im going crazy with Ubuntu here, i think its awsome, struggling to get Red Alert playing on Wine, it runs but after a while sort of freezes, audio still goes, but ya dead in the water! Proud of myself that I even got this far with it!

Secondly ive been fooling around with themes, now, for some reason, all the content on firefox, eg' myadsl forums, are mono white variants, or mono black, making it virtually unreadable exept if I highlight, wierd!

Also, Ive tried to get VMware going here, but it keeps giving me a this is a i386 app therefore you must burn in hell error, im using a quadcore, any ideas that that is about?

aaah, oh boy. i686? Here I was thinking it was i386, how do they differ?

i386 / i686 refers to processor architecture AFAIK all post P4 are i686 and the 64bit systems are x86_64

i686 signifies that it is 32bit (the last two digits x86=32bit) and the 6 signifies that it is the sixth generation of intel architecture.

Lol @ this thread's title!

Give virtualbox a go? Unless you're hoping to run your 3D games in it... In which case, you will have even more hassles.

Well Virtualbox is faster than VMware, so he should have less troubles running games in VB than in VM :D

Red Alert should work fine in WINE. Go take a look at Cedega. It costs you something like R70 per year so isn't expensive (mine never asked me for money ) and you can run any games up to around the last 6 months on it. They mention which games are supported.

Themes are always user configurable, so if something doesn't work for you, edit the colours of the theme.

Never, ever, NEVER reinstall because you messed up your desktop.

If you mess up the machine that it would not even boot, then yes, I'll grant you that one, but if you messed the themes up and you can't make head or tail about it?

In terminal:
Code:
cd /home/[your username]/
rm -fr ./gnome*

or

rm -fr ./kde*
What this will do is remove all the user configured stuff and if you log out and in again you will have a fresh default desktop to mess with!
:D

Same goes for every app you use, the only thing that happens if you remove its directory from /home is that it will start with the default everything next time. To see all the directories of apps in /home:
Code:
ls -a

If you want to play games, use Windows. Much easier. For the few other things you do, use Ubuntu.

Do you work for MS ? Or do you get some kick out of trolling in the linux section making arb. comments ?

Im not trolling you idiot. This is what most people do. Games normally don't work in Linux. That's why people dual boot. Now f0ck off.

idiot ? Is that the best you could come up with ? as to the f0ck off you feel better now ?

I'm playing Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Red Alert on Wine on 64 bit Ubuntu with virtually no problems (they just take 5 minutes to set up following the advice on the Wineappdb). All you need is a decent graphics card. I thought I would have to install Windows, but thanks to Wine it's unnecessary. I love Wine.

Did you miss this? This is purely from what I heard from many many Linux fans who still need to dual boot into XP for games. And no, I don't work for M$. Fool.

Also I don't think you need Cedega. Wine has gotten very good with 3D recently. Personally I don't think you should have to pay a monthly fee for the games you've already paid for.
@ Slootvreter: clearly you're wrong because I'm playing several 'Windows' games on Linux.
