Steyn tackled (one of the few things I thought he was doing poorly this season), he broke the line (more than once), he spread the ball well and he kicked very very well both tactically and for goal.

Sorry Lance but either your blind or just plain stupid. He is growing weekly in his role as springbok nr 10.

I saw him diving into a few rucks as well.

Never saw Naas do that.
Btw, this should be a Steyn vs Naas thread, Ruan ain't in the picture.

Ya he did this very well, it was the problems I had with Morne in the past but seems to me that his getting what the flyhalf position is all about.

Also Im not sure what the big hoo ha is all about? Ruan is a blody good goal kicker, the only reason people slated him was because his kicking was off during the Lions series, prior to that his been excellent, the injury forced him to the sidelines and PDV said if he wants to get back the number 10 he has to prove it. So far what ever his done in training hasnt given them enough proof OR they just think Morne is doing a good job so they kept it like that.

The nr 10 spot was Ruaan's for the taking... He got a light injury and Morne made the most of his chances... Ps why would they replace morne with Ruaan after showing that he is on better for at the moment?

Yup, I reckon he could be that much of a d00s one day.
Hasn't cost a Currie cup yet, so we still like him down here.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers says Ruan Pienaar is still the best flyhalf in South Africa.

Pienaar started the international season as the Springboks’ first-choice flyhalf but lost out to Morné Steyn after suffering an ankle injury in the opening Tri-Nations Test against the All Blacks in July.

Pienaar performed well at pivot against the British & Irish Lions and looked good against the All Blacks in the opener in Bloemfontein but his inconsistent goal-kicking was a major concern.

Steyn on the other hand, is one of the most accurate goal-kickers in the game and has had a dream debut season for the Springboks.

After replacing Pienaar in the second Test against the British & Irish Lions, the Bulls flyhalf slotted a 55m penalty on the stroke of full time to clinch a historic series win for the Boks.

After the injury to Pienaar, Steyn started in his first Test against the All Blacks in Durban and set four records in a sensational Man of the Match performance.

His 31 points was the most by any player against the All Blacks in a Test as well as the most by any player in a Tri-Nations Test.

It was also the World record for most points scored by a player who has scored all their team's points and the South African record for penalties in a Test, beating the seven achieved twice by former fullback Percy Montgomery.

It certainly has been a dream first international season for Steyn, but De Villiers is convinced that Pienaar is the best No 10 in the country.

“He is still the number one flyhalf in the country,” the Bok coach told the Cape Times. “I know I played him at fullback in Australia, but his whole season has been hampered by injury, during the Super 14 and the international season.”

De Villiers also told the newspaper he wants Pienaar to start at flyhalf for the Sharks for the remainder of the Currie Cup.

Sharks coach John Plumtree has followed the national coach’s wishes in the past when he rested Pienaar earlier this year but it is unlikely that the New Zealand born coach will play Pienaar ahead of Argentina flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez.

‘He needs game time at flyhalf and I would want him to play flyhalf for the Sharks in the Currie Cup, but I don’t know where they are going to use him,” De Villiers said.

If he was such a brilliant coach as Lance makes him out to be....

Oh ok, cool, I see that obviously Nick Mallett, John Smit and Jean De Villiers all regard my opinion very highly as they have obviously read what I have had to say on this forum and are now expressing the same views as me in the media. Damn I never knew I held such sway!!

....he would never have said Pienaar is the Best Fly-half :D

Why wouldn't he? He is a rugby coach. He understands that it is not merely about getting your kicks over. If you can do that AND perform the rest of the duties as flyhalf well then you are the complete flyhalf. It is a choice between Naas Botha or Dan Carter in the making. I know who I would nurture.

Seems you are completely ignoring that fact that it is ME that needs to rate PdV accodring to what I believe makes him a good or bad coach. This thread is about OUR view of him.

I can't give 2 parts of a dry turd what who ever says ;) I will rate him once this team is being phased out and he starts building his own team. (Why I need to keep repeating this to you is beyond me *I'll Bold it this time so you don't miss it*)

As for the Pienaar vs Steyn debacle. Steyn > Pienaar nuff said. I mean he is the starting no10 anyway

As for the Dan Carter/Naas comment

Didn't Steyn just out play Carter in the last game? That would mean that Naas > Dan Carter no matter who YOU nurture :p It's the Player that is winning the games for you as a coach that counts....

That is wonderful and all fine and dandy but then don't make silly comments like:

As for the Steyn/Pienaar debate, it is not a debate when the only argument you can put on the table is that "Steyn > Pienaar nuff said". You must have been your school debating team captain for sure.

As for your logic regarding him starting therefore he is the best, it is flawed.

Firstly, he initially only started because Ruan was injured. This injury is the reason given by PdV for him not getting the time he needed. You forget he missed most of last season. Carter was injured. He needed some game time before getting back into the team. While he was playing provincial rugby on his comeback did that make the incumbent fluhlaf the best in NZ all of a sudden?

Secondly, your argument then states that Ricky Januarie must be the second best scrumhalf in South Africa. He is sitting on the bench as a replacement for Fourie, so he must be... by your logic.

Anyway, not sure why I bother. I apparently just need to say Ruan>Morne and PdV>all other coaches to settle the argument. So there

Don't know if you missed it, but the Sharks (your team) have paid a lot of money for some flyhalf from Argentina.

Um, not sure if you missed it but the Sharks player by the name of Ruan Pienaar was called up to the Springbok team leaving them a little light in the flyhalf ranks...

How many games did he play there last year, or this year?
What was he doing at fullback and back on the bench?

Yes, isn't it incredible how talented he is. What can Morne do again? Oh yes, just kick....

Damn Lance!

Just how much more egg can your face take? ;););)

Pienaar musical chairs over

Coach John Plumtree says that Ruan Pienaar’s game of musical chairs is over and he will be used at scrumhalf for the Sharks for the rest of the Currie Cup.

Plumtree, mightily relieved after the log-leading Sharks edged out the challenging Free Staters 24-13 at King’s Park on Saturday evening, said it was time the some order and stability returned to Pienaar’s rugby life.

Pienaar has been shunted between scrumhalf, flyhalf and fullback for the Springboks and his rugby has suffered. Bok coach Peter de Villiers reportedly said at the weekend that he still regarded Pienaar as South Africa’s best flyhalf although he has been replaced by Morne Steyn and his prodigious boot.

Pienaar wants to be a scrumhalf and Plumtree is happy to accommodate him.

“Ruan needs to start feeling good about his game and the game of rugby again. Circumstances (an injury to Juan Martin Hernandez) may result in him having to play at flyhalf again but the plan at the moment is to use at scrumhalf.”

Pienaar took over from Charl McLeod at scrumhalf against Free State and he became increasingly more influential as the Sharks resisted a strong Cheetahs’ revival to win.

Plumtree said he had heard not a word from the Springnok coaching staff about Pienaar.

“They all on holiday, aren’t they? he asked with a smile. “I’m working.”

And he had a tough job on Saturday as his Sharks mixed good with bad in a generally untidy display.

“It was a bit of a mess of a match,” said Plumtree, “and neither side could get good clean ball and any momentum from the scrum and the breakdown were there was so much going on.

“It went exactly as I thought it would. Free State are a proud team and I knew they would life difficult for us. I’m just relieved to have won. We knew it was going to be a difficult week full of disruptions as we tried to integrate the Boks back into the system.

“We certainly needed to tighten up in the second half and our kicking game was far too loose. But know we can work on our combinations and we can rest some players and use some Boks who need more game time, guys like Adi Jacobs, Jannie du Plessis and Ryan Kankowski , who have done a lot of practising but very little playing.”

The Sharks looked vulnerable for long periods on Saturday when they faffed about in their own half or when the Free Staters, and particularly fullback Fabien Juries, split their defence. Fortunately, for the Sharks, the small fullback ran away from his support on three occasions and tries went missing.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske said that Juries, one of world’s top sevens players, was always going to replace the injured Hennie Daniller but he had kept that a secret to prevent the Sharks’ exploiting the new fullback’s deficiencies under the high ball.

“But I thought Juries was the best player on the field.”

He said that the Free Staters lost because they twice turned over possession in the first half (which the Sharks turned into tries) and they missed four kicks at goal. He was also envious of the Sharks who had the luxury of returning Springboks to act as game-breakers in the second half.

The Sharks had a forgettable day with flyhalf Hernandez, playing on his heels, among those making a string of errors under pressure. Fullback Stefan Terblanche was again sound, saving two certain tries with head-on tackles, and making one for Waylon Murray with a remarkable one-handed take and pass, while centre Andries Strauss and lock Steven Sykes were also prominent in the win.

The Sharks did lose two players to injury with Craig Burden (damage to the shoulder joint) and big flank Jean Deysel (knee) hobbling off. Plumtree said that Burden was likely to be sidelined for three weeks and the initial medical assessment was that Deysel’s injury was not serious.

The Sharks now face the Leopards at King’s Park on Friday evening and, as Plumtree conceded, they will have learnt a valuable lesson on Saturday evening – that you cannot keep trying to play rugby deep in your own half against quality opposition.

I will be happy to see him play scrummie as I believe thats his best position.

He will be great off the bench after Fourie. Let the man play where he wants.

well when he came on for Mcloed he showed some brilliant skill, got over the advantage line 85% of the time.
