Most games crashing

Yeah, future fell on its face. It popped up a message saying it had to abort. The error message was...

std::exception
Device removed

now two suspects are elimated.
Not the games or possibly the driver.
I have penchant for stating the obvious:-)

Well...I've been meaning to get a new CPU-MOBO-PSU combo sometime this year. Maybe I can just go ahead and get the PSU now and that will answer the question to the problem. And even if it wasn't the PSU then at least I have that component ready for when I can finally get a Core i5 2500K setup.

specific PSU in mind in terms of brand and wattage?

Nope. I'm all ears...eyes. I'm probably never going to be blasting two GPU's or anything extreme like that. Just a good quality mid range PSU at a good bang for buck price point really. I should look into prices, maybe I should just suck it up and get the i5, memory and MOBO as well.

Any ideas how much I could get for my Q9550, 4 gig Corsair ram, ASUS p5q and a possibly dying PSU thrown in for good measure :-P

ok you have ATI, but alot of guys who just updated to the newest nvidia drivers are having crashing issues (with BF3). Maybe not helpful but yeah...

get a quality brand PSU. Their ampage is better.... coolermaster, thermaltake, enermax etc. spend more on it to future proof yourself :)

EDIT: to give you an example my old enermax was a 360 watt PSU (if I remember correctly) but its ampage was better than the cheap ass 700 watt PSU's. So choose wisely :D

All of above brands have product ranges with low Amps as well. Just one example Coolermaster have about 6 PSU product ranges from GX lite right through to Silent Pro Hybrid.
So you have to go and specifically look at each individual item or specific range.

yeah true droid, soz, wasnt thinking lol, I bought the coolermaster silentpro gold 1000W to be safe, but maybe check if it is SLI capable, that should then provide enough ampage if you are running a single card setup and all your other devices?

Just dont go for how many watts a PSU has, that is deceiving.

That is still a pretty sweet machine. Not sure about the second hand price, but I guess you should get about R1300-R1800 for it.

Few months ago that Quad Core went for more than R1500 new. It has since almost become impossible to get. Probably EOL
Is the 4Gb ram one or two sticks? DDR2 memory has become expensive lately.

That's very true, many are totally oblivious to current requirements.

Doubt I'll be doing SLI. They have efficiency ratings don't they? So watts plus a decent rating of 80+?

This is a fairly new product. I think it is very good value in terms of price/watts/current with 80Plus.

Antec VP650P 650w powersupply It should retail for about R765.
http://www.antec.com/pdf/flyers/VP650P_EN.pdf

Two 12V rails with 35Amp maximum current per 12V rail
Maximum combined amps is 50Amps.

Others

Coolermaster RS650-ACAAE3 GX 650w It should retail for about approx R920
One 12v rail with 52 Amps maximum current

Thermaltake LitePower 700Watt R677
Two 12Volt rails
+12V at 30Amp
+12V2 at 22Amps
(Don't know max combined amps...shame because it is really important)

2 sticks. I'd probably be happy to sell it all for R1300 if it was an easy no fuss sale.

nice find droid!

dazzazzad, its gonna come down to how much you have to spend as to which PSU you get. But droid found a beauty there for a steal!!

These kind of specs is very rare at this price segment.

R750 at rebeltech. I have no idea what half that means but if you reckon it's a good bet for a i5 2500k system then I might just go for that.

I was pretty suprised when I saw that PSU:-)
Many others for a few bucks more, but the amps are insane for R750

Sure your machine is not overheating? Both mine and my wife's have been very susceptible to heat lately. Put a desk fan blowing on high at the side of the machine and all's well. No more crashing.

Okay, the PSU arrived today. I installed it and then grabbed the power cable that came with it only to notice that the 3 prongs are not round but angular. It also has a red strip between the prongs with 10a written clearly on it.

So can I use my old power cable or should I be looking for a proper plug? Or where would I find that kind of adapter (is it European?)
