That stops me getting spam... how?

What wasn't mentioned, and works pretty well is that some "unsubscribe" options are actually ways of capturing your email as an active one. They brute force emails out there, and anyone that replies or tries to unsubscribe is then registered into the database for use on more spammable items.

If some continue to send what look like proper consistant news letters then consider unsubscribing.

Best option to not getting spam: Use gmail.

What stopped me from getting spammed by these clowns was moving over to gmail. Problem solved. Collects 99.99999% of the spam.
 
Gmail captures all those titles and more... like Facebook twitter messages when I dont have an account.

Sorry guys, not going to buy Symantec

Havent gotten spam in my main inbox in over 2 years. But its fun to go to the spam folder and see whats on offer :D
 
I use a catchall rule on my domain name, so that *@mydomain.co.za goes into my inbox. Then, whenever I sign up for anything or use my email address on any form, I use a different prefix - according to the website's name. For example, I signed up to the Samsung SA blog a while ago (http://samsungblog.co.za/) and just the other day I started to get spam sent to [email protected].

That's a pretty good idea. I do something similar using my own domains forwarding to gmail. Easy to spot where spam is coming from then.
 
or you can just add a . in your gmail address somewhere. it all goes to the same account - periods are ignored and you can filter it.
or you can add a +suffix for example: [email protected] that also comes to your account and can be filtered out.
the latter gives you more control because you can set up different rules for different suffixes. but the + character is sometimes incorrectly flagged in email validation scripts, so it's not always reliable.

This route seems to work fine for me

I used to do that. But then I got spam at addresses that didn't really exist like:
joe#nicksmit.com
bob#nicksmit.com
etc
 
Talking of SPAM, I got a call from Regent yesterday wanting to sell me their twaddle. They say they got my number from FNB from finance for a car I bought last year.

Interesting thing is that when I signed the forms for the finance I made sure that I specifically deleted all aspects of the contract which would have given them permission to give my details to a third party. SWINES!!! :mad:

I cannot wait for the Protection of Personal Information Bill to be passed! This sort of practice will be dealt with extremely harshly and the associated costs to companies that continue this practice will be severe. Bring it on!
