Anyone recommend a MB with SATA 2 support and can take a P4 3.0 Ghz CPU.

is that cpu socket 775 or 478? and how many SATAII devices would you want to put on said motherboard?

Yeah a bit for gaming.....how do I know if it is 775 or 478, it is a Hyper Threading CPU.

Say 2 max.

look on the chip and try to find one of those numbers. you should find one of them on the top of the chip.

I think it is 478 as it is the one with 3.0Ghz with HT.

Took it out last night and did not see any of those numbers on it. Just say P4 3Ghz/512/800......

I am wondering if it is maybe a 775 as I had a read and this seems to be my processor.

Socket 478 systems do not require any special standoffs or reinforcement plates; instead they use a unique scheme in which the CPU heatsink attaches directly to the motherboard rather than to the CPU socket or chassis.

The above is not mine.

Socket T (LGA775) systems use a unique clamping mechanism that holds the processor in place. The heatsink is attached over the processor and clamping mechanism and attaches to the motherboard.

My heatsink is attached directly to the CPU?

Can this be right.

478 is a white socket. You put the CPU in then "clamp" it down with a straight metal arm. The heatsink provided with the CPU is square / rectangular (bird's eyeview).

775 is a black socket. You put the CPU in, then put a metal cover plate over the CPU (the cover plate is attached to the socket), then "clamp" it down with a metal arm that is looped at the end. The heatsink provided with the CPU is round (birds eyeview).

From your CPU description, I'd guess you have a 478. IIRC, 775 was introduced with Prescott which had 1MB of cache. You've described 512K of cache, so I'd guess you have a Northwood, in which case it's most likely you have a 478.

Samples:
478
775

ummm this may stupid since i sell computers hahaha

but was 478 pin and lga 775 is not pin its like flat there not pins anymore?

Thats correct. the pins in the 775 are on the mobo now. and masticore's description is spot on.

duderoo: they don't manufacture 478 mobo's anymore but you might find some old stock at some retailers.

So would it best to get a new chip and board or just stick with what I have as it is pretty decent?

Also is the duo that much faster than my P4 3 Ghz with HT?

Core 2 Duo is by far better than a Socket 478 P4 but it costs more so if you got some cash, an upgrade would always be good otherwise stick with what you got. I have many machines and my one gaming pc is a 478 P4 3.2 HT with a gig of DDR400 ram and it plays all games decently. If you want perfection then you gotta spend the $$$$.

Ploempie...I may just stick with the P4 and wait to see whats available in a year or so.
