Due to the fact that I don't move out of the office, I have a desktop with a 17" CRT. I've asked my CFO for an LCD as I feel it's better for my eyes, and he said motivate it in writing. So ... what is the motivation?

No flicker like CRT?
Further away from eyes?
No radiation like CRT?

Any links saying LCD is better? ;)

Better Impression for company, if anyone comes into your office.
Less Desk space, less clutter.

Will result in more desk space, more room for work papers, training certificates, pictures of the CFO etc!

LCD screens have less glare than CRT, so less eye-strain.

Uses less power, uses less space, collects less dust, less eye strain and there is no risk of burning in an image :)

If it's big enough you can fit 2 word/excel/etc. documents next to each other, improving you work speed..

Ofcourse it also removes those annoying black bars running across your screen when watching series and is really awesome for gaming... :D

Everyone knows LCDs are better.

You are not supposed to explain that LCDs are better...you need to motivate why the expenditure is justified. Its a CFO so your motivation should ideally be based on the effect it will have on the bottom line.

If the screen is visible then argue the impression angle, if not then go for a combination of powersaving + employee productivity.

Less downtime needed due to visits to the optometrist as your eyes slowly rot away...so more work done

The bottom line is important. Electricity is a portion of the bottom line. LCD uses a much smaller amount of power. We cannot plug CRT monitors into UPS's, as they draw too much current, and actually burn out the UPS. Our secretaries can't afford to lose the data they are working on when the power trips, so we are giving them LCD's, because they can continue to work long enough to ensure data retention. It also means that the LCD is on a better protected circuit (When UPS'ed), which means less chance of it blowing when the power surges. No need to mention that CRTs are usually quite stable under bad electricity conditions. :)

Smaller form factor equals more desk space, which does NOT necessarily mean less clutter. Rather, especially in my case, it means more. You could also argue that CRT is a near dead technology, and there is the possibility that in 3 years time, you may not have the support channels to have one fixed, whereas LCD will still have the channels available. That comes into the long term bottom line, in the form of maintenance costs.

Good luck motivating though, because most of those people only think about Rands and cents for this month, and don't really care about next months expenses. Cheaper is better in most of their opinions.
