Moto G

That's really good, I've got the g4, didn't pay 9k for it but wow

...then this shyit happened.... https://myvodacom.secure.vodacom.co...lg-g4-lte/red-vip/158863?cid=ntrn_0_dsgn_6848

A fricking LG G4! for R100 x24 and R200 for R200's airtime... WTF vodacom... is this a misprint?! its a R9k phone!? :wtf:

So on tuesday i went to take out two contracts... for the missus and me, it was pretty hard to pass up...

I dunno what you were looking at, but it doesn't show those numbers for me.

Ok, So R299 for phone and R200/month airtime

Oh right I see what he means. The phone itself is R100pm, but the contract is R200 a month so you are paying R300pm, which isn't bad about the price of a P8 a few months ago from other providers with quite a bit of air time.

What I usually do is see how much I spend on airtime each month, then go for a topup contract. See what option saves you the most, the sim-only is normally not the cheapest. They will have some low end phone that is even cheaper than sim-only. Alternatively go for the best phone you can get without paying for the phone each month. Sell the phone directly after you upgrade.

Let's face it, no one keeps a phone for two years.

the phone... which is very future-proof IMHO works out to R2400... at the moment it costs anywhere from 8 - 9K

and R200 airtime... which is what i usually spend - R150 for GB and a R55 voucher for calls on vodacom.

so ja... it made sense.... FOR ME

Just as an FYI, I renewed a sim only on Vodacom this morning and they double up everything because you don't take a phone. So for the Smart L, I get 500 minutes instead of 250 and 1gb instead of 500mb.

Pretty sure prepaid would've worked out cheaper, but I am tired so not running the numbers now.

Prepaid is never cheaper.

If you spend R200 on prepaid every month you could just as well go for a Topup 200 and get a R2000 phone on it for free. Sell the phone and your first 10 months are free.

Or you can go for the No Phone deal and pay R139 and get R200 of airtime. With Vodacom there is always one phone that is even cheaper if you take it instead of going for the No Phone deal. This month for example you save a further R10 per month if you take the
ALCATEL PIXI 3 4.5" on Topup 200 for just R129.

So no, prepaid is for morons.

Damn, that was a good deal. Looks like they corrected it now...

EDIT: I see its under the Uchoose Flexi 200 package (R100+R199 as a previous post mentioned)

The rate on uC 200 is R1.80/min. I'm Currently paying 79c.
So the actual airtime value is 111 minutes. Compared to 253 minutes on prepaid. :/

Only from a cost perspective if your monthly high enough. Some people do not like to be tied down with a contract and others do not spend enough for a contract to make sense. Prepaid is also great for those that are black listed and not allowed a contract.

I was just using R200 as example, it applies to all topup contracts from R55 and up. If you know you are going spend X amount on prepaid a month then you might as well score from it by going for a topup contract.

If you are black listed then what I said is true, prepaid is for morons.

Always thought you were a level headed forumite until you posted this gem. Your argument is flawed as 1 size does not fit all and contract versus prepaid numbers paint a very different picture.

Benefits on prepaid are far cheaper than contract - data bundles and call rate per second for example. In 1 year after moving to prepaid and buying a phone cash, I have saved the amount I spent on the phone and now save over R600 per month compared to the contract I was on.

whats the ratio of phone calls to data usage anyways.... its not a big deal for me

calm down guys

Contract vs Prepaid has many variables as we've seen

its about what works out for YOU and your needs

And while we may all be equal, we are not all the same. And neither are our needs.

I saw a chance to get a futureproof phone for R100 a month over 24 months while still retaining (more or less) my montly airtime spend.

BUT THATS ME!

Unless you go for 6 month periods of not using anything on your number then no, it makes more sense to get a topup contract. On prepaid you spend on airtime and get nothing back.

Is this thread still about the Moto G...? I got a pre-owned earlier this month. I immediately rooted & installed a customised (optimised) version of the stock OEM Rom. I'm loving it! Seller included Amzer cover he had been using with it.

It's a fact that prepaid is much cheaper. Contracts still only exist because of the general South Africa mindset of credit sales. That phone they want usually cannot be bought for cash.
